Hi All,
Recently acquired a 1998 2.8 prefacelift wide body Z3. Loving ownership so far. Can anyone give me advice on what brand filters to go for? Also what oil is best recommended. Lastly, any tips on brand of gearbox oil & how many litres will suffice? I’d like to change all its filters, oil, spark plugs and drop the gearbox oil before I start really putting it through its paces. Coolant flush is also on the agenda! Thanks

Thank you so much for your offer and help. I was wondering if anyone knew the make of the OEM filters at all? Thanks to all the help above.

Have a look on Opie Oils web site, put your car in their oil finder to see your options, yours will take 6.5litres, Mann filters are reccomended by a lot of Zedders. If yours is high mileage consider using 5W40 synthetic thatn helps with oil consumption as the engine ages. Gearbox would have had a label stuck on the side detailing what it should have, either ATF or a gear oil you will need 2 x litre bottles for each as they take 1.3 litres, they just need filling till they overflow at the filler hole. If yours requires an oil as opposed to ATF in it you should use a GL4 spec oil.
Arm yourself with a new copper or alloy sealing washer for the Diff plugs the alloy ones disintegrate with age. Gearbox has tapered filler and drain pliugs so no sealing rings.
The Diff will take gear oil usual spec 75W90
Use the forum discount if you buy from Opie its listed in the order form.

I use Sopers and Rybrook BMW mail order for filters and other OEM parts. If you mention the forum you will get a10% discount. Give them the last 7 digits of your vin number and they can get the specific parts for your car. Google www.bimmer.werk, quote your full vin number and you will get the full build spec for your car. Differential oils are specific for Limited slip diffs and non L.S.Ds. Most 2.8 Z3s had L.S.Ds, but check yours on bimmer werk.
As colb says Gearbox oils are also specific. go to; general maintenance/ transmission-oil-changes-by-Mike- Fishwick/ on this forum for complete info.

I've just ordered a few suspension parts from Rybrook. Gabriel in the Parts Dept on 01926 333888 (3 then 1) was very helpful but no discount at present.
