I am new to this forum. Just purchased a 2001 z3 3.01
Couple of things I could use help with. The Service engine soon light is on. On YouTube I saw how to reset. Although all green lights are back on, the service engine soon light remains on. Any ideas?
Tks

When that happens I generally find it's best to get it serviced ;)

As to service lights, the green bar is in relation to general service, oil filter changes, I assume you reset that using the round diagnostic socket in the engine bay by shorting two of the pins? If you are left with the clock face in the display this refers to the brake fluid change that should get done every 2 years. That has to be reset when done to extinguish the clock face icon. I use my scanner to do all the resets but you can buy a little unit that plugs into the round diagnostic socket that has three buttons, one for oil service and one for Inspection service and one for brake fluid change (clock face).
You will also need a 20pin to 16pin OBD2 cable changer to plug the unit in.
A decent OBD2 scanner should also be capable of resetting these indicators, Creator 310+ is a popular BMW scanner.

I've got a creator 310 for the BMW and for the Merc I have an iCarsoft

But got me thinking - what does the BMW specific creator 310 do better than something like the ANCEL AD310? As well as my car specific readers do I also need a generic one - as in I was talking to somebody yesterday who's been quoted a £125 for a readout on his Dacia - or can my creator 310 read generic ODB?

Thanks guys (and gals)

Don't think the creators can read just OBD2 they are BMW specific. Best try another OBD2 scanner on the Dacia see if it reads, pretty sure my Launch Tablet scanner would read Dacia as that is capable for Worldwide brands and has individual software for each make and model as well as just obd2 capability but going that way will cost £300 for the Launch tablet. Mine came with 2 years free updates and had proved it's worth.

Try it and see. The worst that can happen is a message on the screen saying it cannot communicate. It cannot cause any damage.

Tony.
