Right, then...

Tried to search for this, but I don't know how to describe it. Next to the top switch on my roadster (2000 2.3), there's a red light and a sensor. I'm assuming the red light is for the security system (assuming it has one); what's the sensor for? Does it prevent me from putting the top up when it's sunny?

The red LED is for the alarm, should flash when you've set the alarm, but the other bit? Could be some kind of after-market alarm or immobiliser.
Thanks! Now, I don't have a fob, so I'm assuming the alarm arms when I lock the door - is that a correct assumption?

I don't think so. I seem to think they are 2 seperate systems @mrscalex

It’s a US car so I’m not sure the same situation applies as in the UK. But I would tend to think so unless the car has been modified. Which it possibly has given the non-standard sensor present.

In the UK the alarm is only toggled on/off by operating the remote control blip built into the key. Turning the key in the lock does not toggle it.

A year 2000 car in the UK would not have a separate fob. In fact it’s only the early cars, 96/97 I think that have a separate fob as the alarm was an after factory fitment by the dealer.

Looks similar to what I have in one of my zeds it is an aftermarket
Either alarm and immobiliser
Or just an immobiliser

this is my keys the black plastic thing works my alarm/immobiliser
I touch the plastic bit off the bit in the car to arm / disarm the system.

Looking at the receiver in the car your one should look like a little plastic bullet with a metal but in the bottom.

Halfords used to fit Cobra systems commonly back in the day. Many imported cars had them as they were Thatcham approved and got you a reduced Insurance premium with one fitted.
