So I'm selling my Peugeot 206 (this isn't an ad either) and someone contacted me through Gumtree. Bascially they want to pay through Paypal and then send a courier agent to collect the car.

The email does seem really suspicious and she hasn't said anything about how to do the transfer of ownership etc.

To me it is all too complicated and not as easy as when I've bought a car, ie paypal deposit, go see the car and pay cash.

Maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way? I do want to sell the car but I don't want to screwed over in the process.

I wouldn't complicate myself, if I was you.

Well that answers that question then!

At this point I think the car is cursed after a few people have said they'd buy it then dropped out due to insurance etc :banghead: I've been trying to sell the car since I got the Zed

.....So, anyone want an exciting and cheap run about? Maybe a competitive autosolo car? Well I have the perfect car for you! :D

Well I don't see an issue personally, if she transfers the money to your PayPal you transfer it out into your bank, so long as the transaction(s) is completed before the car leaves your person no worries. As for transferring the car details it can be done on line in minutes these days..

It does feel like a scam but if they want to transfer the funds to your paypal account, why not let them.:)

If she can use PayPal she can send the money directly into your bank account by cash transfer. I would definitely NOT use PayPal. They can take the money from your PP account.

I think the link to paypal she has provided is the scam it will look right, you set it up to your account and they will empty it !!
Pretty sure the link will just allow them your details they can then set up a real account with a different email and your bank details and just spend .Don't do owt with it delete it....

Tony.

This was my worry. She can put a claim into PP and they freeze the money or my account etc

Either way I haven't responde in a few hours and I haven't heard anything.

Thanks again everyone!

Had this at work, it's scam. We took a payment over the phone for £2000 plus for some golf clubs and they arranged a taxi to come and collect them. The payment all clears fine but a few days later it gets reversed, by that time they already have the goods and haven't paid a penny. It wasn't me who took the payment but the guy that did told me and before the taxi came I had already spoken to the card company who said it was pending from an Australian bank account, even though it cleared our card machine. The taxi turned up and I told him it was a scam, he had also taken payment over the phone for the same card and was due to drive 3 hours each way to deliver the goods. He almost lost several hundred pounds and a days worth of work as he was happy to take the stuff to him as they offered him way over the odds to deliver but he didn't pick up that it was a scam.

Of course you should have protection with PayPal but there are ways around this where they use fake accounts. Before they track them down they are long gone and have your car and you have no money. Wait until payment completely clears and meet with them to exchange.
