Hi guys went to start my Z and it went into self test mode this morning, the car would not start and there was a strong smell of petrol. I have had a cam position sensor fault so will change that this week, does anyone have any ideas about the car going into self test.

Could this be something to do with the faulty cam sensor?

Mystery solved, my Z did this again last night problems starting with the gauge needles going all over the show and the SCS light was on. So after some net research and a few phone calls, it looks like this is a sympton of a faulty cam sensor, so just ordered one from BMW, this was on my to-do list at some point anyway.

The Z was not going into self test as I had originally thought the erratic gauges are just a part of the problem, this should now be fixed this week.

You didn't used the car since May30 or the symptom just came back again?

Hi guys just replaced the Camshaft position sensor on my 1.9 M43 engine, figured as a few on here have had problems I would photograph the stages.

This is for the 1.9 single cam M43 engine there does not seem to be much info for these, the job took about 20 mins from start to finish.

So to start with I removed the air intake housing from the rad, although I have a Simota I put this back to keep the engine bay looking clean.

The Cam sensor is located above the thermostat housing and is fairly easy to get to, I did not have to remove any other bits. Also the 1.9 M43 cam sensor lead is built into the loom so no removing the intake to get at the other end.

So this is a plug that unclips and just pulls away from the sensor.

The plug was fairly oily and when I took the sensor out found the O ring had partly disintegrated so this was cleaned with contact cleaner.

A single allen bolt holds the sensor in position and this was easy to get out, the sensor on the other hand proved a bit of a pain as the O ring had allowed a load of oil to gunge it to the block.

But after prying it from the block gently with a screwdriver it came out ok.

Again this needed a good clean up but no other problems

So this was the state of the sensor when it came out, thick with crappy oil so no wonder it was playing up, I did think about just cleaning it and re-using. The replacement is an OE by Delphi £52 from Eurocarparts far cheaper than a BMW stamped Delphi from BMW at £103, the new sensor is a lot thicker than the old one. I guess there was problems that needed a re-design see below for comparison.

So in it went plugged the lead back in and fired the car up, first time straight away. The car has not done this for a couple of months from cold, in fact it was a different car. No rough running or petrol smells very crisp for a 1.9 and no fluctuating revs, so went for a spin and the car pulled straight away with no lag, it also seems quieter on tick over.

So overall a job I was not looking forward to, was very easy with very good results, going to clean the MAF Wednesday and get the car serviced again at the end of the month. So after the Zshed visit for the suspension and diff this car is just getting better and I am really starting to enjoy it again. Planning a re-map as well not for more power as it is a 1.9 just to smooth it out even more, sorry if this was long but hopefully enjoy.

Is so good when you can service your self the Zed, it's like returning a favor...for the great time on the hils or twisty mountain roads!
