Hi All, My first post as a new member. I own 3 BMWs; a 2017 535GT; a 2018 428i M Sport convertible and a 2006 Z4M roadster. I became interested in BMWs in the 1990s when we lived in Greenville, SC. My neighbor was the CFO at the plant in Greer and got the use of any 2 BMWs he and his wife wanted and chose new models every six months. He brought the first X5 I ever saw to my house to show me and I was hooked. I went out and bought my wife a 1998 740 iL and a 1998 528i 5 speed for myself. I have since owned a 2006 740iL and a 2006 X3. I bought the Z4M in 2009 coming off a 3 year lease with 12K miles on the odometer. It now has 45K miles on it; Imola red with black interior and no nav. I’m currently retired in Savannah, GA.

I have a problem with my Z4M that I hope someone can tell me if they’ve ever encountered this issue. I have replaced the motor that powers the hydraulic pump that raises/lowers my top about 5-6 years ago at the local BMW dealer. They said it was caused by water getting in the well where the motor was located, which I’ve come to find out is a fairly common problem with the Z4 roadsters. Recently the top would again not go up/down. I assumed it was the same issue. Took it in to the same dealer and they called and said the motor was fine, but there was a leak somewhere in the hydraulic system. Said they had to completely remove the convertible top to be able to locate the leak! $1600 of labor before any cost for the repair. My question is, has anyone else ever encountered this same issue? I’ve never heard of it. Please help!

:welcome: to the forum.

I've only have a manual top, so wouldn't be able to help you with this particular question. But, from what I've read, the electric roof's motor is not particularly fast or reliable. Perhaps disabling the motor (effectively making the roof manual) would be cheaper/better?

In my use case, I don't see when I would be using the electrically operated roof, but..

Hello and welcome.
In this video, after 2:20 minutes I can see that there is just one pump but yes, it seems that the top has to be removed to reach it. So… sorry, unless someone has a better way to do this, thats whats needs to be done….

If there was a leak big enough to stop the roof working I would suggest the leaking oil would've made its presence known by now. I would be inclined to fetch the car home and see if you can located the leak yourself. Have you checked other things which would stop the roof working such as the locks either side of the trunk for the piece which can be raised with the roof up to give more luggage space. If 1 or both is on the wrong position the roof system will not work.
Have a read through the owners handbook for other things.

Tony.

I am really sorry for the useless comment. I didn't read your post closely enough, so didn't realise you were talking about a Z4.

For future knowledge the roof doesn't have to be removed to change the pump. And in fact in doesn't need to be replaced I the original stupid location, it can be relocated in the boot (trunk). If the BMW dealer put it back where it was fitted they also are stupid too.
