Seat belt recoil problems

Guys, my biggest bug bare with my Z is the seat belt recoil, take my belt off and it just sits there, I have to feed it back, is there a fix, the passenger side is even worse, its slightly better if I take the belt out of the guide but still feels very weak,

I sprayed my belts with a silicone spray which helped but still not as good as i would like.

Common thing on most seat belts as dirt gets it.
Pull belt out fully, spray WD40 into recoil mechanism, allow to/or feed rewind. Pull forward and feed re-wind a few times, should then run free- works for me.

I'll try that, my drivers side on the zed is very slow and also in my Sorento.

Try this, pull the belt fully out and wash it well with HOT soapy water. Rinse and dry WELL. Spray liberally with silicon spray and work it all the way in and out continuing to spray it. Never fails for me!. Get lots of this problem on M.O.T. mainly on ladies cars because the webbing gets sticky with make up and hairspray.

As a part of the seat belt inspection during the M.O.T. test the belt should be plugged into the buckle and the webbing pulled out and released, the webbing should recoil to the back rest of the seat with no-one in the seat.

Don't get it then Tony, had to feed my driver side belt back in, after an MOT my passenger seat belt was always still plugged in, obviously as someone had to move the car, never got a fail or and advisory.

Well then it maybe it wasn't tested properly Mike. It doesn't have to recoil fully back into the "B" post, but back to the seat with no-one in it.

OK, get you Tony, would not recoil fully but must have been far enough.

Never fails to surprise me Mike how much people abuse their seatbelts, after all they only save your life. Some testers pull the belt out and then give them a sharp pull to engage the inertia lock, should NOT do that, a big no-no.

ps. Seat belt webbing is very strong, I still have a tow "rope" made out of seat belt webbing. I have towed Transit vans with it in the past.

I like the cleaning idea and WD40 will make your car smell nice, never thought about that, just read horror stories about replacing the part that it recoils back into.

The balance spring in the inertia lock for a seat belt is as weak as a clock spring. Amazing what your safety relies on!!

Guys, please excuse my ignorance here - but where is the seat belt recoil mechanism [reel]. The seat belt recedes into the mount near the hoops and I don't know where the reel is.

Pull all the way out
Spray with silcone and wipe down
let it retract
repeat until sorted
