Hi All I have water in the front carpets that have traced back to the scuttle panel drain holes which are blocked. Rather than disturb the scuttle panel would enlarging the two drain holes in the panel to get a wire coathanger to unblock the debris, or is access from under the car maybe possible? thanks.

Hi mate, the scuttle panel is simple to release. Wipers and a few clips, well worth the effort to clean detritus and unlbock the drains.

Won't affect any sealing.

Best take the panel off and give it a good clean in there and unblock the drains, you will be surprised by the build up of gunge you find in there. Gets particulaly bad on Z4 models, on those when the panel is off its worth taking the wiper motor out and removing the 6 screws on the cover plate which will reveal the large contact plate. This is usually covered by migrating grease and affects the parking position of the wipers when they are switched off often leaving them higher on the screen than they should be. Clean the grease off the contact plate and put it back together and refit, wipers will now stop in the lowered position as long as you replace the arms in the correct place.

Big Thanks to member Duncodin, mine is 1.9 engine and he said you can access the drain pipes next to the firewall, easy to get to and it works.top tip.

My 2 cts, the plastic scuttle panel is sealed against the windscreen with butyl tape that with time and heat etc gets dry and does not seal well, not a problem you would think, but you will find that with heavy rain some water will seep through the gap and end up dripping over the heater motor and get in and if the seal between the wiper motor and the firewall is not good (and it probably won´t be after 20 years) you will get water inside the cabin that way too despite the drains being unblocked under heavy rain if you park outside, I resealed mine with new butyl tape after cleaning and it´s been perfect since. If you want to go all in you can also replace the seal between the heater fan and the firewall but that involves taking the dash out etc.

Thanks for that Mario, i don't go looking for work on my cars however i like them serviced and well maintained. The z is sorned for winter stood outside with a half cover which covers the windscreen / scuttle panel join. But yes after 21 years the butyl tape join could do with some attention. Job for the summer, thanks again Mario.

Bit confused, is there a tape seal from scuttle panel to windscreen or not ?
Also how do I get the b####y wiper arm off the passenger side ?

No mate, no seal, the plastic scuttle just sits on the outside of the glass. Bonnet up, undo the retaining not then give a good yank towards you.

Thanx to one and all.
Job done.
Scuttle was absolutely full of S###. Probably never been cleaned out in it's life.!!
There is a sort of seal, soft slightly sticky, bead. In a couple of places that had been displaced so I did my best to get it back in the correct position. Without that I don't see how any water making it past that goes anywhere other than in the top of the fan.
Onwards and upwards...more to do.
Like the seats out and dry the bloody carpet
