Hi Guys

I am a new member, I have a Z3 Roadster 2.2
Year 2000, I have had it for 2 years and love it.
However I have started to get a “screeching noise” when I start her up. Can anyone shed any light on why this is happening.

Many thanks

How long does last? 15 seconds or so? It could well be the bearings in the so called smog pump if it’s still fitted.

Tony.

ps. Welcome to the forum. Where are you located please?

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your reply I am in North East Scotland.
When I start the car the screeching starts and stays on!.
Can you advise where the smog pump is fitted and what is it.🤷‍♂️

Many thanks.

This is what the pump looks like, it’s mounted just behind the O/S headlight.

However this only runs for 15 to 20 seconds after starting. You can isolate this as a possibility by disconnecting the 2 wire cable that feeds the motor. Does it screech continually? Can you record it on your phone (video) and upload to YouTube orcWhatsApp it to me if I pm you my number?

Tony.

Could be a belt issue that makes such a sound. Maybe check tension and general condition of the belt. See if you can hear it coming from components run by it.

Hi Tony,

Thank you very much for taking the trouble to send a photo of the pump. It is pouring of rain here at present but hopefully it will be better tomorrow and I will check and get back to you when I have done as you advised.

Thanks again

Hi MikeK

Thanks for getting back to me, I did wonder if it was the belts, I am going to get new belts and fit them to see if this is the problem.

Thanks again.

If its the second air pump you can blank the manifold and remove it it supply's air through the manifold in winter
To help the exhaust lambda sensors heat quicker I removed my pump 2 years ago if you remove it remember to blank the exhaust valve on the tail pipe

I seriously doubt that it will be the belts as such, it is very rare you get a poly-bee belt that is spring tensioned to slip to that degree. It could however be that one of the pulley which the belt drives has seized which makes the belt skid over the pulley instead of turning it.

I'm not sure the 2.2s (or any of the facelifts) had the smog pump. I think it might have been a 2.8 thing. Might be wrong...

I think it likely to be the drive belts or belts, it maybe that the tensioner is losing its tension (unlikely) or the belt has stretched, more likely the latter, they stretch over time, they also glaze with age which causes the same issue.
if it is the belt replace with a good quality replacement EPDM belt, Gates, Dayco, Continental.
You could squirt the belt with a ‘short blast’ of WD40 around the pulleys before starting the engine, if it’s silenced then the problem would indicate the belt.

Hello Nomad,
Glad to be of help, however please note this is a short term fix, at very least the belt needs to be changed, when you remove the old belt, spin the tensioner if it spins freely it need to be changed, if there is resistance on the roller it should be ok.
if you need help with sourcing the tensioner please ask, the best quality is called INA.

Hello Dakar Z3
Thank you for your message, I am wanting to replace the tensioners, as suggested I have checked online for INA, could you advise a supplier as I want to purchase from a reputable company.
Many thanks once again.
