Then Henry Ford decided that he could make carburettors and gave us the wonderful V V carburettor. Hideous piece of crap which often went in the scrap bin to be replaced by a single choke downdraught Weber.

Regarding the SSU, I've done a bit of research about this and it turns out that Al Read was the leader of the design team....(younger members may have to Google it regarding his business life) =))

Not that one mate. Strange looking thing but a bit of a rally champ back in the day. I'll pull up a pic .......

My TR7 has two SU carbs :joyful:

I remember back in the day we would put brake fluid in the card instead of light oil, as it would make the car rev up and down quicker.

The SU carb is a fantastic device. Extremely simple and yet capable of correctly fuelling an engine under almost any conditions. Because the mixture is controlled by negative air pressure drawing the tapered needle up, the variations possible in the air/fuel mixture are infinite, and it can cope perfectly well with high altitude driving. Try taking a car with a fixed jet carb like a Weber over an Alpine pass and it won't cope well at all. The SU takes it all in its stride. I have had many cars with twin and single SU carbs and I love them - my Dolomite 1850 has a pair. They aren't hard to set up once you understand how to do it, and once set they are good for years of driving. Great British design.

The SU also gives good economy too, after reaching your cruising speed you need less throttle to maintain it.
