I'm totally sure that I'm showing my ignorance, but just in case somebody doesn't know about the problems with S54 engines in the (few) Z's around, I came across this this morning (when it was tipping down outside)- also if buying one the interesting point is at the bottom of page 11 (I think) - explains about the sticker that should be applied to the "B" post to denote that the engine has been upgraded by BMW.

I'll creep away quietly again now.

Welcome to Zorg 'noZyet'

I'm guessing by your forum name & signature piccy you are possibly trading up from a Merc :D What are you looking for?

I have no idea about the S54 engine (or in fact any of the engines!) but it looks like a useful article!

Cheers, Gary

Ha Ha - thanks for the welcome, Gary. You never know I just might - if only they'd made a V8 Z!!! I know people have done it but I'm not that patient !!

Cheers

Bob

No S54 Z3m's will have tis sticker as none had the recall.

BMW quoted that the lower red line of the S54 Z3m (7,400 RPM v 8,000 RPM of the M3) meant that the Z3m's did not require a modification.

Some Z3m's have had the work done as goodwill by BMW but BMW would not record it as a warranty item (much like rear cross member repairs) eg my S54 had it done as a goodwill when it required a new fan and ancilliaries under warranty.

Oops , I did say i was probably showing my ignorance - sorry for that - they just extended the warranty on the Z's.

Did they just do the Z8 as a left hooker?

I had a quick search and found that there was a youtube video in google, no longer on youtube so couldn't play anything, that had the description of converting one to RHD. there was also a link i spotted that BMW made one RHD for a movie but couldn't find anything more than the link as it's destination didn't reveal anything.

Apparently, the lead singer with an Irish boy band had a RHD Z8. His was specially converted (but not by BMW).

Unless you are a lottery winner, the Z8 is a dream car anyway.

In answer to the OP's original question, it would have been a Z1 in 1988 or '89.
