I've noticed there is a faint 'rubbing' cyclic noise when I'm driving, seems proportional to the RPM of the engine, and doesn't happen at idle or when I press the clutch in. I only noticed because I drove alongside a wall with the top off, and that amplified the noise...

Could it be clutch and or gearbox? I have no idea when the gearbox oil was changed on that car...

Jack it up and spin the wheels by hand to see if you have a seized caliper piston thats dragging the pad. Check all four wheels. As to gearbox oil best change it if you have no history of oil changes, check what you should put in the gearbox some use Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). BMW fill for life which considering the age of our cars is not a good thing. You may find a label on the side of the gearbox showing what should be used to refill.

It could also be something as simple as the heat guard lightly touching the driveshaft. That happened to me once.

The simplest test and i always go for simple is put your hand on each wheel to gauge temp after a drive.then move on from there

So, this MIGHT be brake related. I did a bit of an emergency braking yesterday (the kind of braking you do when you've JUST notice that big yellow box by the side of the road :))

This morning, no more rubbing... Now I know the 2 front calipers were changed recently, so I wonder if the back ones might be playing up... I'll monitor the temperature of the back wheels next...

Ok, so there IS a brake problem, but it's not all... I've also some sort of rubbing noise when the car is stopped. It's not there /all the time/ and I suspect it might be related to the engine mounts? Anyone care to listen?
I've made a video, but google rather butchered it, so the audio is quite poor. However at 1:10 onward you can hear it. I put down the camera and went to put my foot down on the accelerator a bit (the rubbing is proportional)....

Video: Jump to 1:10~ or thereabout...

Try running the engine with the auxiliary belt removed.
