z3 m44 engine 106,000 miles... stopped car today, and restarted and had a metallic clanging acompanied by whistling noise under bonnet Initially though it was the starter motor bendix sticking......while idling seems to get better / quieter when driving and not noticable... unable to locate really where the noise is coming from... so removed my ac belt and auxilliary belt thinking it maybe a noisy alternator bearing or noisy steering pump / water pump.. started car briefly with belts off noise was still there... replaced belts and restarted car noise seems to have disappeared did disconnect the disa valve as thought it maybe that.. the sounds seems to be coming from top of the inlet manifold and when the engine is turned off stops immediately which to me pointed to some sort of rotating part...

i just wondering if it could be water pump impellor breaking up.( doesnt make sense as the noise was there with the auxilliary belts removed.).... replaced thermostat and few months ago and thinking now maybe i should have done the water pump the same time....

its funny because i topped up the coolant last night as it was a bit low.. wondering if topping up the coolant, and with it being so hot today may have put a bit more strain on the water pump.

Any ideas please.. as hoping to go to zedfest this weekend...

may have to take the missus daewoo matiz not happy...

Al..

My car was whistling like a budgie on the recent euro run. Head gasket gone, between cylinders 3 & 4

i hope its not head gasket doesnt seem to use water ....seems to me to be a rough bearing or metallic rubbing sound i wondering if its timing chain guides worn or cams dry of oil... its very strange though

Well that was your first thought, could be the Bendix not disengaging enough and that could be the whistling noise you are getting with the ring gear spinning the motor. Only way to check is see if it is spinning by sight if you can see anything, maybe by feel if you can get a hand on the case. Other than that pull it out for inspection, not sure how much room you have to get it out from underneath.

yeah i beginning to think the same it has really thrown me as theres so much noise from the timing gear anyway....

my initial thought was the starter motor i said to Ang.... when we parked up in Abergavenny she said go back a bit as I was a bit close to the car in front, so flicked the starter and thats when the noise started... was whistling all the way home and thought vacuum leak and all sorts of things..belt idle pulley water pump steering pump alternator, as i changed the belts a few months ago,

I got the rocker cover off now, and going to give it all a good wire brushing and clean new gaskets, and new water pump while its off.. top timing cover is off..

managed to get the crakshaft pulley off god that was tight... !!!!!... going to get the bottom timing cover off tomrrow and the water pump and see if its all ok down there..

just so unexpected this to happen as the car has been running so good...

Well since you have it stripped down best change the water pump and maybe new chain and tensioners followed by the starter motor. At least you will know all the parts are new. Great pity its happened now just before Zedfest.
