Guys

Anyone ever changed a roof. And can it be done on your own

I have a bmw one with a new zip in screen but when it was fitted the glue must of run and has damaged the roof

I have a fantastic one with a zip in screen but it’s on another car and thought about swapping it over. To try to save money.

Just seems a shame not to use it and leave it on the scrap car.

But I know it’s only £300 from jack.

Even if you don't want to fit it yourself it would be well worth taking it off the scrapper and selling it on. Would go towards having one done at Jack's? It is a fairly messy job I understand fitting a roof as you have to clean off the sealer between the back of the roof and the car body.

No special tools needed. Just patience, ability to be careful and methodical.

And about 6-8 hours of time. And a helper.

The main risks you face are:
  • Not sealing properly and causing a leak
  • Damaging the rear wings as you maneouvre
  • Wanting to scream due to the tedious requirement of cleaning the old butyl off.

Cheers all. I have a look. I’m not putting the old one back on. Just chucking it in the other car.

So may be an idea to try to take it off. It I damage it. No probs then

Taking it off is very easy, take up the rear parcel shelf carpet and you'll see about 15 10mm screws.

Remove them and a couple of 8mm nuts by the folding mechanism and it lifts off with a very good tug!

The roof motor / raising/lowering shock absorber needs to be unclipped too.

If you were keeping it then it's worth going around the base of the roof where it joins the car and breaking the seal as much as possible with a plastic knife type tool.

Yeah very messy cleaning off the old sealant, just have gloves on, plenty of rags and a bottle of turps to melt it down a bit. Took us about 4 hours start to finish, it is a two man job.

We took the roll bars out. It's actually a very quick job. The long job is the anchor points and plastics which you don't need to touch.
