Hi all, just been out to air the Z3 and roof wouldn’t work, I’ve opened the pump valve and dropped it manually but where to start? I know there’s a micro switch somewhere but how much of a pain is it?

The microswitch is on the passenger side of a RHD car. The switch opens when you lift the roof up a little at the front. The wiring that goes through the roof frame can split and of course the switch itself. Also brake switch under the brake pedal needs to be working. .check your brake lights are working as a starter. Both are not too much work to change.
Zedonist does a good switch and wiring replacement kit.

The brake light switch also has a role as well, mine as I found out was intermittently working and only found out when I was looking in the rear view mirror not to see functioning on each pedal press and hence my roof only functioning when a complete circuit was being made.

Roof Fuse good, I’ll check the brake lights when it gets dark.

Although still don't discount the switch even if your brake lights work, and all other avenues exhausted...As my brake lights still worked but the roof did not, and it was the switch or the connection to it...Had me buggared for a bit that one did....

Very true that ! Also the old one is unlikely to be able to be removed without breaking it

Especially in a manual, Auto might be easier. I cut mine off with side snips... I never noticed if the cruise control was working, because I never use it, but I suspect it was probably affected too.. Not sure what wizardry is inside the switch, I never performed an autopsy...

Hi guys, jumping back into this, just changed the brake light switch (fun) and still no power to the roof. Where next? Roof switch? There’s two purple relays next to the motor so change those? I’m baffled!

Did you change the microswitch before? The wiring to it, where it goes through the frame can split too

Bypass at the switch at the base of the roof pivot. This is the same as bypassing at the switch its just before the switch, as the wires go into the frame on the way to the switch.

Is that the micro switch at the pivot? If so that’s good as I bridged it with no result. There is power going to the roof as the dash lights dim when I push it part back and push the button. Could it be low oil level it a jammed pump?

No follow the connection to the side of the parcel shelf, remove the connector and bridge the pins in the block. Mine worked from there so I just changed the wiring. I had to depin the connector and re solder new wires to the pins. Covered the wires with the sleeve and the taped the wires to some strimmer wire I had fed through the roof frame and pulled through. I had left some wire connected to the micro switch though and used some of those heat activated solder connectors. I used the connectors after the micro switch housing. I also used some extra cable sleeve mesh that I used for sleeping PC wires to make a neat oem look.

If you are completely bypassing the switch remember you still need to lift the roof at the front …and unclip it. Operating the roof without is likely to bend the frame ..which I suspect happened to mine at some point

AND ITS FIXED
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Fitted a good (used) pump off eBay and bingo, first time.
I used central hydraulic fluid which seems to be one of the recommended fluids and it works very smoothly.
Cycled six times and the level hasn’t dropped.
Happy me 😊
