Roll hoop torx bolt...Help PITA!

Well, first job I decide to tackle is an easy one by all accounts just swapping my standard hoops.

Left roll hoop popped out easily enough, but one of the torx bolts on the right hand side turret is just spinning, won't loosen and won't tighten :mad: the bolt is really tricky to get to under that plastic flap, very small working area...

Cross threaded? Over tightened and stripped thread by last owner? Any tips on how to remove the damn thing and what to do about making the new hoops secure??

All of the 5 bolts that have come out ok look strange..like the last 4 or 5 threads are stripped... Are they supposed to look like this? IMG_20170513_192842.webp

Sounds like the threaded insert its screwed in to has broken away if it's just spinning around. Can you get a screw driver head underneath the torx bolt and lever it up slightly as you turn it?

So you think the thread in the turret rather than the bolt? I've given up for the day Gaz, but if I can get some leverage under it then I'll give it a go tomorrow.
 
It is a tight space, the bolts have quite a big head on them, you need a forked tool to hook behind the head of the bolt, you can pull on this whilst unscrewing the bolt, if it is the bolt that has stripped then it should come out.

Edit: using a tool like this could help.

Try and get some leverage on the bolt head and then turn, probably cross threaded and then over done

If the bolt is scrap then just get a new one from BMW
 
Try a bit of epoxy glue, or JB Weld on the bolt head and stick your torx bit into it. Once it's set you should be able to pull it slightly as you unscrew it. It will mean sacrificing your torx bit, but it will save a bit of hassle
 
Replace the lot with allen headed bolts.
 
Just bought one myself as I scuffed the head. Couple of quid each from dealer.

These are vital bolts. So I'm a bit concerned about the integrity of the installation if the thread on the chassis has gone.

Nothing a helicoil couldn't fix

Also, if two of the bolts are in its probably ok... Ish
