Rocker gasket sealant

Hi all,

I’m replacing my rocker gasket and have seen on YouTube that people add additional gasket sealant to the mating surfaces. However nobody seem to be consistent on where they put it! Could someone please clarify? Is it just the corners? Or does it even need it?

Also I must have nearly a litre of oil (slight exaggeration) at 4 and 5 spark plugs. How’s best/easiest to clean this up?

Cheers

They only need sealant if reusing the cover bolts without changing the rubbers. In my experience anyway.
1x 6 cyl
3x 4cyl
Changed the rubbers on the bolts and the leaks either stopped, or didn’t occur.

BMW TIS shows sealant used around the half moon shapes front and rear of the cover and the flat surface between the Vanos at the front, no where else as the long sides of the gasket has compressible lines which forms a good seal. It is prudent to put new round rubber seals under the cover bolts as these go hard with age and don't compress well to ensure a seal under the bolts. Buy a gasket set that includes the fifteen round seals, Elring is the brand I use and Blue Hylomar sealant for those half moon areas. BMW is also a source for the round seals not that expensive, if you ring Sopers at Lincoln and order them they will post them to you and dont forget to ask for the Forum discount. Once you have the cover removed you can take the centre plug well gaskets out and clean up the cover, ensure the gasket stays seated when replacing the cover, bolting it down will seal around the plug wells. Your old gasket will be hard and brittle from age and repeated heat cycles.

I dab a bit on the front and rear lower corners. Use it sparingly.
