Return of the Dambusters! Squadron is to be reformed to fly Britain's new stealth fighter jets from HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier

• 617 Squadron was formed on March 23, 1943 for the Dambusters mission
• The famous squadron is being reborn with the state of the art F-35 stealth fighter
• The Dambusters will be based at RAF Marham in Norfolk while on land
• However, the jets will fly from the carrier, HMS Queen Elizabeth from next year

Following the Second World War, 617 Squadron saw service in Malaya before it was disbanded on December 15, 1955.

The Squadron was reformed again in Scampton in May 1958, with Vulcans - when again it was disbanded on New Years' Eve 1981. The squadron was reformed in 1982, receiving Tornado GR1s, later updated to the GR4.

The Squadron saw service in Iraq as part of Operation Telic in April 2003 and was again disbanded in 2014.

Nice write up mike,I was in a Vulcan bomber cockpit yesterday at Coventry airport,it was amazing how 5 tiny people were crammed in such a tiny cockpit ,that Vulcan was flew into the airport from scampton bye one off the squadron in 1982 were its stayed ever since,midland air museum is well worth a visit .

When we were kids my brother and me had our photo taken sitting in the cockpit of a Mosquito. I've looked for the photo when we cleared our parents house but sadly couldn't find it.
