Hi

I'm planning to retrofit roll hoops on my 97 2.8 and is currently looking around on ebay etc. However a complete set with storagebox all bits and pieces is very costly. But I often see kits for sale with out the center storage box, but with brackets, tabs, hoops and screws. (I'm really into these after market solutions)

So I was thinking, maybe I can modify my existing storage box to accept roll hoops.
I was thing I would need to replace the top lid with the tabs + a smaller lid.
And make holes for the roll hoops to go trough it at the bottom.

Is this something that has been done before (I tried to search but didn't really find anything) and if I did try this route would it work? I assume that there are few mods that would be needed be done, ie. howto get the tabs around the hoop to stick in place.

Any pitfalls I not aware of with this mods?

Thanks

You'd have to be pretty inventive to do that and make it tidy and fit nice.
The smaller console allows the 2 smaller trim pieces to cover the inner roll bar brackets otherwise they would be inside the console and you would have to cut it to bits to get them in.

I had the chrome hoops on mine before going the full OEM route, if you can do without the cubby box just remove inner part and drill the top lid. Can secure in outer side turret stays in place can even fit after market perspex screen, not a safety device just cosmetic, looks just fine .

It would be a good time to fit a subwoofer whilst you at it.
Going by your excellent handy work on the armrest you'd have no trouble!

Thx a lot folks!
I believe we all agree about the looks with roll hoops.

I've already had the entire back storage thingy out when I installed my wind deflector ( I installed the type that secures in the outer turrets ), so I'm quite comfortable messing in the back there :) And my back side trim is already modified for role hopes. See the pictures where I have modified the side trims with the adapters for the deflector.

btw: could anybody confirm that those whole at the chassis is for the role hoops brackets?

Another shot, amazing how much these deflectors actually helps.

Just to summarize my idea this was something I had in my mind:

1. Basically moving the top lids top my current storage box and find a way to secure part 19 to 12.
2. Make holes for the inner parts of the role hopes to go trough on both sides
+ getting all bits parts displayed in the second picture + the center lid.

This way I would keep the bottom storage box compartment (which works fine with locking) and my box is in good condition.
I don't really need a sub, I love the pure sound of driving with the top down :)

Anyway I'm contact with @spurs fan in a coupe already, so I might get sorted out without this "hack". Although I like these challenges...

I purchased a set of hoops with all the plastics a couple of weeks ago from a forum member. Looking forward to getting them fitted. I'll take pics as it's done.

It's seems that with most interior work on these cars, it always easier with the seats out :)

I’m a little late to this thread but am planning to fit hoops to my 97 2.8. However I’m sure I’ve read somewhere that they don’t fit to some very early models. Does anyone know where I can check (or how I can check) if I could fit them to my car? Thanks

The rear box is smaller as there are 2 big brackets that bolt to the body which the inner part of the roll hoop fits into .

Not sure if its been mentioned but you might need the plastic turrets as well. These are the bits where the seat belt housing covers up. They have a flap on the inside section too.

I guess you could dremel them too.

I had toyed with the idea of buying bits but a set will come up circa 350 when the time is right. Sell on the old kit for £100.
