Hi all! I have a 2001 M54B30 with 23000kms (13600mi), very much a garage queen! As far as I know it still has the original water pump, which I assume has the dreaded plastic impeller. I asked my mechanic if I should get the water pump changed and he said that was unnecessary, however his shop is an hour’s highway drive away so I’m worried that if the impeller does go due to age I’m going to be stuck. Or that my coolant system will be full of bits of plastic that won’t be able to be removed. Am I worrying too much as my mechanic thinks?

My 2.0 AFAIK is still running original with over 200k on it.. maybe I should be worried ....

Edit: just looked it service history, that was up to date just prior to 200k, nothing about water pump, now at 240odd..

Most on here will recommend you to change the water pump and the rest of the cooling system. My 2.0 6 cylinder had 136000 miles on it when I did mine but the only reason I did it was my radiator had a tiny leak so I thought I might aswell do the water pump/ thermostat/ viscous fan coupling/ hoses / adjuster pulley and serpentine belt at the same time. If I had not had the leak I wouldn’t of replaced any of it as all looked in good order.

If the car was filled only approved bmw coolant the pump will have no issues at all.
If tap water or whatever found on the shelve coolant was added, I would recommend a flush and a pump.
