While changing the oil yesterday noticed a bit of play in the fan , so need to change the coupling but while working in that area I intending to change water pump, thermostat and tensionery pulley as I have no idea when --if ever --they have neen done we have had the car over 8 years Belt was done around a year ago (3,000 miles) I normally use Mahle when available , any suggestions as to a competitive supplier or even a good alternative. Also suggestions as to best solution to refill radiator with.

Regards

Meyle, Febi, First Line, QH, also FAI parts are decent quality. I would aim to spend around £35 for the pump.

Tony.

The Meyle pump I am getting quoted from bmwmotormec is around £25 so I assume its plastic not metal.

Never assume when it comes to parts like this, ideally use a motor factors where you can look at it before handing over the cash?

My concern is that @Tony was refering to around £35 for the pump, whereas this one seems to be 30% cheaper but known make and supplier. But I have read that Meyle make different quality parts , so bit concerned

Re the metal pump thing - I had one of the those fail within two years of fitting. I think it also came loose on the shaft so I’m not very convinced they any better.
My car has had 4 pumps in 10 -11 years so a service item really....or all the aftermarket pumps are just not made as well as the original...lucky they cheaper than electric Z4 pumps!

When I replaced the pump as a precaution at 104k miles, the old pump appeared to be in perfect condition. Despite all the scaremongering over plastic impellers, I replaced it with another OEM pump which has now been fine for another 42k miles. The old pump which I had removed has now done a couple of years service on my E46 whose pump failed at abut 80k.
I take the belts off once a years and check the bearings on pump, tensioner and alternator.

I always use the BMW coolant, it's about the same price as others.

Meyle is metal impellers. It’s the make I use with no issues - done over 5,000 in one car. I use bmwmotormec and they are just cheap as opposed to sell junk.

Oh no. That will set a few people off. Unwritten rule of the forum not to say you use BMW coolant. You’ll be asked next if you use BMW toilet paper.

I use BMW coolant too. But some people think it’s an unnecessary expense - I don’t agree as it’s very similar price to other makes.
