Remote locking Sync

My 98 Z3 has a remote locking transmitter looks like an oblong with the corner cut off, with a red and grey button. The ignition key is a seperate item.
The transmitter opens and locks the doors and sets the alarm.
I have discovered a spare transmitter and key, the key works but the transmitter lights but does not operate the locks, [I have put a new battery in it].
Do I need to re program the transmitter to the car? and if so how is this done? Threads I have looked at appear to refer to a different fob set up.

I interestingly I was reading a thread on mcoupe forums and came across this thread but not sure if it applies to the diamond key but worth a try before trying the above.
