I purchased a remote from the local BMW garage £140 you will need to take the V5 document and a utility bill as ID. Then you will need to program the key to the car. My remote locking wouldn't work so you need to get a replacement off side door hasp.

Does the central locking work off the key? If so try changing the battery in the fob first. If it doesn't work off the key acuators are a common fault. Is your fob part of the key or is it the "house brick" type?

Hi and welcome being a 1997 model I would imagine you should have the 3g ews system. You can pick up secondhand fobs on eBay and new cases. There is a guide on here to show you how to pair a fob to your system when you obtain one https://zroadster.org/articles/3g-ews-remote-fob-programming.24/ you could check to see if you have the actual modal behind your glove box before seeking a fob though.

But please ascertain which system you have before buying

You could ask @spurs fan in a coupe to see if he has any. To help can you post a photo of what keys you have.

Welcome Graham from another old-timer  just down the M56 from you (if you are Eccles, GM).
I believe the 97 European models did not have the anti-theft system factory fitted but they were dealer installed on delivery initially as an option. Certainly the case for my Dec 97 build.
If you do have an original fitted from this period it will be what is commonly known as the housebrick type separate fob. The integrated fob/key followed on from these.
There are some pics in this https://zroadster.org/articles/3g-ews-remote-fob-programming.24/ which may help explain.

Edit : @Althulas pipped me to it.
