Both my dads parents survived the 1st ww wish I had written their stories,both of them were affected deeply grandad was a Batman for a general which probably saved him .But my grandmother probably had just as bad time or even worse as she was a nurse in the royal New Zealand hospital in Hornchurch where broken men came back from the front ,I’m biased but she was one of the most gentle kindest women I’ve ever met .

My paternal Grandfather, Sadley never met him as he died in '64 two years before I was born. A troubled man by all accounts

Christopher McDonnell No 10253 Born 25/12/1895
Joined 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers Aged 15!!!!
Became Member of 1st Battalion South Wales Borderers prior to the outbreak of WW1
Sent to France on 13th August 1914
Awarded The Star Medal
British War Medal
Victory Medal
Fought and survived
Battle of Mons
Battle of Marne
Battle of Aisne
First Battle of Ypres

Nobody should of been put through that sort of hell,it wasn’t only their body’s that were broken.My gran found it hard if they got someone well enough to go back into the front for another chance to be slaughtered.

Bad years indeed mate. They all suffered in silence for decades and this impacted massively on their families.

My Granddad, my mums father, Bill, was a Desert Rat and he made it back and passed away in his 90's, tough old boot.
Used to keep us kids glued to the dinner table with his stories ....

My dad passed away at 94 years and my regret is that he wouldn't talk about the war at all, neither also did my Grandfather on my mum's side. I never knew my Paternal Grandfather. In Marton 2 miles away, where I was born and lived till I got married in 1980 there is a memorial in St. Margarets Church Yard to all the local men and boys who lost their lives in the Great War and even as a kid I could read the names of those lost and "attach" them to the local families from the village and surrounding area, I doubt that many still can today and that is very saddening.

What I find even sadder is that the peace we live in is taken for granted by so many and the sacrifices made are lost .I know my grandparents wouldn’t want their children to go through it ,after surviving the war to end all wars!

The sad thing there is they did, only 20 odd years after the Great War, it all happened again.

Anyone see 'They shall not grow old' last night? Stunning re-interpretation of old film stock, fascinating, horrific (at times very hard to watch) and tragic.

The final bit on how those who were fortunate to return were ostracised by society was hard to take. Thankfully, a century later, the selflessness and horror of war has become so widely accepted, remembered, and, in doing so, celebrated.

As posted I was working but was quite chuffed at the Isle Of Man electrical guys doing this considering on how wet and windy it had been over the last few days leading upto Remembrance Sunday.

It was world wide broadcast, as we saw it on the Sunday evening news on TV!
Great way to commemorate this sad moment .

For the first time in 18 years I wasn't on parade.
I had to time out but I did help with poppy appeal and did go to my best mate grandchildren school
For there remembrance assembly and spoke to the children about the poppy and remembrance
The children where great the art work the poems where out of this world.

I even did the act of remembrance at Blackstones football before the match on Saturday 10th Nov
But on the 11th Remembrance Day I went to NEC
