We are fortunate we were born when we were. Compared to previous generations we have had it easy. My grand father was in the army during the war, as he was a bank manager So he went in as a major! I'm not sure what experience he had from working in the bank that was relevant. A very distant ancestor Sidney Godly was the first soldier below officer class to win a VC during WW1. I am related to his grandparents and not directly to him.

My grandfather on my mother's side was a blacksmith during the 1st World war. I'm sure he saw some horrific sights but he rarely burdened others with them.

And, in direct comparison the man who would be the next Labour Prime Minister of Great Britain can’t even be bothered to turn up to honour the Men and Women who died so he could be yesterday. Let’s Micheal Foot off the hook for turning up in a Donkey jacket and wellies years ago.

Tony.

ps. McDonald absent too. At least they made it today.

Is your Remembrance Day the same as our Veterans Day in the US? (Nov 11).

Yup. 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Very well respected every year with a large ceremony at the Cenotaph in London where the Senior Politicians, Royals and Military Officers lay wreaths followed by a massed March past of Veterans with a nod to HM Queen. Each village, Town and City does similar but on a smaller scale. Nationally there are 2 minutes of silence from 11am, pretty well observed to.

That's awesome. It seems to have lost something here in recent years, at least as a national event. I do find more people thanking me for my service, and my grandkids schools have lunch-with-veteran relatives events, all a big change for me from when I was spit on and called all sort of things upon my return from Vietnam. Glad to hear of the respect shown in Britain.

I still cannot believe the grief you guys got returning from serving your country Tom. I guess you might call those "people" snowflakes in todays language.

It was the times, Tony. Anti-war protests everywhere. At that point, I just wanted to get on with life, and try to forget that butcher shop nightmare. Easy to say, hard to do...

Annoys me when people cant show the respect on the 11th...its not too much to ask is it?

Two Minutes Silence

Two minutes silence, too much to ask?
For those brave men who gave their last
That gave their futures for our past
Lest we forget.

In Flanders fields where poppies grow
That hide such horrors we'll never know
Those battle grounds for friend and foe
Lest we forget.

The father's, brothers, and the sons
That went to fight for everyone
Should all remember what they had done?
Lest we forget.

For those brave souls that did not come back
That met their end in fields, on tracks
To honour them should be our pact
Lest we forget.

So, remember those who gave their last
That gave their future for our past

Two minutes SILENCE is not too much to ask

Lest we forget.

Shirl was in Wilkos in Gainsborough on the 11th and everyone in the store stood quietly for apart from one woman who was old enough to know better. She got the death stare from Shirl too. They had staff on the door preventing anyone else going in and they even had to explain why to some idiots.

Tony.
