Unfortunately due to a change in family circumstances I need to replace my 2001 Z3 with a more practical car.

It started out as a mechanically sound but relatively tatty £1,850 car which I bought unseen (was I mad?) off eBay as a fun project for myself and my sons.

Inevitably it rather ran away with me and now owes me £8,500 which I know I won’t get back obviously.

So what has been done (by professionals not me!) in the 3 years I’ve owned it? (In no particular order).

(1) rusty body panels replaced & complete respray April 2017;
(2) brand new high quality soft-top fitted March 2018;
(3) replaced wheels with original design refurbished plus new centres June 2017;
(4) replaced fabric seats with nice leather (guides not broken) December 2017;
(5) headlights polished May 2018;
(6) new Uniroyal Rainsport 3 tyres (now done about 8,000 miles) June 2017;
(7) Powerflex bushes to front April 2018 (after doing the NC500!);
(8) Radio/CD player with phone Bluetooth& microphone May 2017;
(9) New coil springs May 2016;
(10) Replaced rear shelf carpet & added BMW mesh windbreak March 2018;
(11) Replaced steering wheel with much nicer version;
(12) new ignition coils and plugs January 2016;
(13) Annual services & MOTs obviously.

In fact that car has just had its annual MOT and service at 127,902 miles. MOT expires 2/1/20 - no advisories.

The car has had 9 former keepers but I doubt any of them have loved the car any more than me. I could have started with a dearer example but may well have ended up doing much of the above anyway.

I will post some pictures of it if it stops raining!

Before I advertise it elsewhere I thought I would see if anyone on here wanted to make me a fair offer and give it a good home.

I will be removing the cherished plate but if anyone wants to check the car out with DVLA the registration is K4FJK. I expect it to revert to X326FLH.

I see there are no facelift “Hell Rot” 2.2s for sale on Autotrader at the moment. I guess you either like the colour or you don’t!

Merry Christmas everyone!

PS: the car is in Leicestershire

Surely after spending all that cash you should keep it.

Buy a shed for your daily duties.

You'll regret selling the Z

Thanks for the kind advice but I have no option really.

My wife had a seizure and has had to surrender her driving license for 12 months. We are ending her lease and returning her car on 3/1/19 which leaves us without a practical car.

I’ve found a nice 2009 3-series touring which is good value and has been well maintained. It’s 8 years younger and hopefully won’t need anything but routine expenditure. There will be a difference to pay but I can’t keep them both.:(

Sorry to hear you predicament, hope things get better for you.

That era of three series do throw up some big bills I'm sorry to say, sensors mostly that can hundreds of pounds per pop.

I know two local dealers who'll no longer buy them.

If you want a motor that only needs servicing costs then have a look at the Jap stuff.

Honda, Toyota....

Not so much Nissan anymore since their involvement with Renault.

Late Skodas seem to be pretty reliable these days also, which is unusual because I can't say the same for some of the other VAG motors

Late Ford's are good nowadays also.

Good luck with your hunt.

Sorry to hear of your family issues.
What engines suffered the whole “cam chain snapping issues”? Can’t remember off hand but do a little research is my advice.
I have a 2005 x5 3.0d as a daily driver and so far I have done 175,000 miles in it, no dramas except a cracked manifold, £80 off eBay a self levelling suspension module, £30 and regular servicing and super regular oil changes.
They are cheap as chips now for what was £50k new. If you don’t intend to use it in a ULZ daily past 2021 it’s worth a look.

Looks great, perhaps you should give people an idea what you would like to get for it. You can then always negotiate. Sorry to hear about the health issue, hope all goes well with that and good luck with the sale.

Thanks.

I have looked just now on Autotrader and the cheapest 2.2i 2001 on is £2,450. It’s done less miles but I doubt whether it has had quite so much done.

My classic car insurance policy valuation has been agreed at £4,000.

Based on the above I would sell for the best offer received between £3,000 and £4,000. Reasonable? Please put me right if not. Better still, make me an offer!

Stick at £4,000 or a very near offer.

The cam chain issue appeared around the end of 2006 my daily driver is a November 2006 2ltr diesel msport x 3 brilliant car economical and if you add a tin of dpf cleaner every month (10 quid from Halfords) very reliable , the easiest way to check if it's a engine with cam chain issues remove the oil filler cap and if you can see the cam chain it's the earlier engine and doesn't give any problems
