I have always said dont worry about a spare carry a small pump & tyre weld, but with this little problem you would not be able to solve it,a bloody big hole that.
so as from today I will put the spare back:thumbsup: you have been warned

Bugger! Yep that would be a problem with only a can of weld to hand! I only have a can of weld, no spare and no spare carrier so my bad if similar happens.

That's bad luck Alan, great pit crew though .
Did the punctured tyre/wheel fit in the boot ?

Indeed. Have a new spare wheel and tyre ready to go on next time I'm home. If it's the rear the C-in-C can get a taxi to the train station

l can confirm the wheel did travel home in the boot with the lid tied down, I said to Alan
if you leave Maxine by the side of the road he would be looking at hard labour for about 2 years:(

Well done for having the spare

Any idea what would have caused such a large tear - glass?

Wow, bad luck Alan.:(
Yes, have my spare and the last time I looked it seemed in ok condition, certainly good enough to get me to a garage.

I take it you were the official photographer Baz, no point in you getting your hands dirty as well=))=)):ymdevil:

Well, embarrassing post this, that was a good trip! I knew I had a spare wheel , but, I must admit I have not looked at it since I checked it when I bought the car 2 years ago. I found 2 nails of the same type ( looked like gripper rod nails). I believe this caused the tyre to gradually deflate I didn't notice any difference in the handling until the sidewall blew. The spare was under inflated as well, are they sure it needs 60 psi? Thank you @Jack Daw for the use of your electric pump. Managed to get home on the spare. Now changed all the wheels until I can get a new tyre. Now have another slight problem, I can't shut the boot, the latch is in the locked position and I can't move it. Any ideas. Regarding the AA I do have recovery but god only knows how long they would have taken to source and fit a tyre. A spare was a better option.

That was a bit of bad luck Alan but it backs up my theory of keeping the spare. I have had punctures like that in the past. I frequently check the pressure in the spare and take it out qnce a yeare for a good cleanup and check. :)

The only good thing about all this is that I got to control the traffic flow:) and use a warning triangle from my boot for the first time:happy: just wish I had a hi-vis jacket on

No, and another thing we decided between us that we could have done with stop and go boards one for me and one for Maxine and then the others could stand and watch us just like the real road workers=))

When I asked the RAC about this type of situation , having removed my spare wheel, I was told that they carry 'Universal' spare wheels so that they can get you to a garage/tyre dealer. As most new cars do not come with a spare wheel and only a few models have run flat tyres it is obvious that this problem is not one that is going to be confined to Z3 owners who have ditched the spare wheel.
Like others, I have my phone and breakdown cover, but hope I don't need them !!

Recently had to call the AA out for a flat tyre on my wife's car, AA man was great arrived very quickly, put a universal spare on, and followed me from Bala to Porthmadog, Left the car outside a tyre dealer, (after dropping all our gear at the caravan) and got it fixed the next morning
