Rear wheel bearing, have I screwed up?

My very slow back end rebuilt is not going as smoothly as anticipated, and I'm now thinking I might have b**gered the new wheel bearing.

With the hub pulled in, but without the driveshaft installed, I have a load of play. Does this all tighten up once the shaft is in?

Thoughts?

It doesn't look right.

It's a single piece roller bearing. When you were installing, did you push on the inner race, or the outer race. You have the symptoms of someone who pushed on the inner race.

I just got new rear bearings for the Z4 (yes I know its not a Z3) but also a single piece bearing and there was zero movement between the inner/outer rings 🤷‍♂️ I guess @Lee is the person to advise he will have done dozens to date.

I doubt if the driveshaft will have the length to pull that together but that is all it should need.

That's what I thought. The other comments had me worried for a minute

Thanks chaps, it was one of those "this can't be right" moments.

I'll get a shaft in and get on with it.

The outer race is a double race, but the inner ones are separate, so that they can be inserted one from each side.

I had the exact same panic when I first installed a new bearing. =))
Phew! I'm glad I'm not the only one! If I can escape the office early enough, I'll go get the first shaft in.

With the benefit of hindsight, I'm beginning to wish I'd just paid someone to do it for me! This has got to be the worlds slowest rebuild!

I wouldn't worry how long it takes, at the end of it you can say you rebuilt it with your own bare hands.

well there is that, but it's in my mothers garage and every time I go round I get , "Oh, while you are here, can you just....!"

You can pretty much fill in the blanks how you want, fix the telly, fix the computer, sort the fishpond, check the boiler, check her car tyres, fix the phone (again),..... It usually takes 4hrs to do 1hr on the Zed! =)) I need to send her on holiday!

Okay, so whats the trick?

Squeezed the hub into bearing so it was all the way home. Bearing then felt tight laterally. "Encouraged" the shaft splines into the hub, with a block of wood and "tapping stick". Just can't quite get the shaft in far enough to get the nut started.

Yes both sets of splines were cleaned and greased.

Is there some magic clamp tool out there for squeezing the shaft into the hub?

A large nut and bolt will do it before you fit the shaft, but try to keep it central in the hole.
