How To Guide Rear storage compartment change keys

Many Z3 owners upgrade their cars by fitting roll hoops. Mainly OEM are fitted as an excellent update to their car.

The rear storage compartment on the Z3 has a key lock that utilises the ignition key from new. When upgrading between standard and roll hoops fitments there is a way to change the key locks.

On either of the storage compartments you need to get to the locking mechanisms. These are accessed by removing the inner part of the compartment.

The four pics show the two style/sizes of compartment. Both of them have hinges for their lids which must be removed by taking out the four screws (hidden under black blanking covers).

Once you have wriggled off the lid and then removed the screws all the way around the edge of the compartment. You should now be able to remove the inner to see the mechanism to open the upper and lower doors.

The locking mechanism looks as the pics.

Put in place the locking mechanism which matches your key.

Reverse the process by
1) Re-attach the new locking mechanism with four screws
2) replace upper and lower door release mechanisms in place using 2 screws each
3) put the inner compartment back in place and re-attach using the 5 - 7 screws (depending on what type)
4) re-attach the upper compartment lid via four hinge screws and blanking covers.

Just to add a note....

there are a few pieces that make up the mechanism.

Once you have access and can see the locks, before undoing anything take pictures of the orientation of the cogs etc.
It will make putting it back together a lot easier. ( I didnt, and thought I would easily remember how it went together....and it took me ages to sort out..

Good point!

It depends on whether it’s locked or unlocked to begin with. My pics assume they are unlocked. It took me a couple of goes at the mechanism that opens the lower little cubby hole. Was ok in the end though. I couldn’t find this info any where else so as I was converting my Zed today (from OEM roll-hoops TOO non roll hoops) I thought I’d take snaps on the way.
