Hi,

When you take the factory back speakers out, they have a solid green and a green/black going to the bmw speaker connection. it has no signs on it which is +/- i took the speaker case off too and you can't tell from that.

Anyone know definitively, which is which?

Is there are way to connect a volt meter or something to the leads while the head unit it playing to find out?

I really want to be 100% sure before I put it back together!! :)

I believe that the system has wire colors that are negative when they have a black stripe, not really electrically an issue for audio other than the out-of-phase condition produced by inverted connections. This will reduce the overall bass output of the system by being "out-of-phase". Easy to fix, just reverse the wires.
Just FYI, out of phase in audio means that one speaker is responding opposite another when audio signals are introduced. So, one speaker would move out and the other speaker would move in when both should move in tandem or the same direction.

It's all listed in the wiring diagrams. Go to the "Resources" section of the forum (see blue ribbon at the top of your screen) and select the diagrams that match your Z3's build date.

Thanks,

I'm looking at what I think is right, Z3 1999... But it doesn't look like solid green / green black for rear?

You need to know which stereo system you have and if you have a roadster or coupe. The diagram you have posted is for a coupe.

Had a quick look through the wiring diagrams. Each one list Green as positive. The negative is usually listed as brown. A Black strip, often indicates a negative connection.

My best guess is:
Green = positive
Green/black = negative.

@NZ00Z3, that would seem a reasonable way to go. I'll take the head unit out too and look there, maybe if the wires run all the way, I can confirm from there. thank you.
