I can see where the fitter is coming from - working outside of OEM standards; in his mind, may leave him liable if something untoward happened .
A sign of the sad times we live in.:(

Having measured up as suggested above, I think the maximum I could fit is 15mm per side to avoid protruding beyond the body line. The picture of N4ALLYs car seems to indicate that that the tyre slightly protrudes with 20mm spacers, but it might just be the camera angle? Am also conscious of the firm advice above to go with 20mm each side.

I used to be indecisive but am now not so sure!:(

I thought that when looking at Nally's but it may be the picture angle.
I ran 20mm on my stock 8.5j 41 offset but reduced them to 15mm to match the front wheel fit.
To get the same look you could measure the front gap but the rear will always sit different due to the suspension setup.
Desicions decisions !!

N4LLY's car is a facelift so wider body than the MK1 4pot (and different rim) so not a good comparison really, best go with your measurements on your car (suspension height affects things too).

Isn't the rear beam different also on a narrow prefacelift ?

What the two above just said lol

I have a fat arse so the 20mm filled the
Arches perfect. Some one with experience of your body shape will be along shortly.

Being a "skinny arse" (not sure if this is the correct technical term) car, have decided on 12mm spacers (24 mm overall increase in width) for the rear as the most suitable. Will post up a picture when fitted, fingers crossed this is the right call for this model.:)

12 mm spacers fitted this afternoon. Happy with result, car might have taken 15mm spacers but 20mm would have been too much and have protruded outside the wheel arch. Pictures (before and after below). From others advice, it seems that the wide body works with 20mm. My advice for the "skinny arse" (love this term!) would be 12mm or 15mm at a push. Hope this might help others.:)
