Through doing some minor maintenance, it has become necessary to replace the drivers side drive shaft.

I popped my reg into Eurocarparts and up popped a driveshaft. I bought it, collected it today and brought it home to find it was the wrong one. Returned it to Euro who said they didn't have the correct one and it would be a few months for them to get it.

I tried a few local motor factors to no avail. Tried the main stealer who wouldn't have one available until the end of July.
Local breakers doesn't have any. Not overly keen on the second hand route though.

Got the part number off realOEM and put it into Google. The incorrect one from Euro came up along with various others from Autodoc etc. My worry with ordering one of these is the possibility of the wrong part being sent as with Euro.

Has anyone any ideas of where I could potentially source a preferably new rear driveshaft?

Car is a 2002 Z3 2.2 sport

Thanks in advance.

Ebay could have one. Rebuilt ones are usualy equaly good.
Do you know spcificaly whats wrong with it? Maybe you could just replace individual components instead of the whole read driveshaft.

Try @spurs fan in a coupe , @Synclare or maybe @mrscalex for a used one. What's happened to the old one? Not a common repair item.

The ends of the splines are rounded over. They were like this when the hub was removed. But we are now struggling to refit the hub and are deducing that it is the rounded over splines which are the issue.

We assume that the driveshaft should slot in quite easily?

Thanks

Chris

Not necessarily Chris, these shafts were fitted at the factory with some type of "Loctite" substance applied to the splines. If you get a triangular section file and gently clean up the splines on the shaft and in the drive flange you may find you can get it back together. As long as the thread for the hub nut is good I would give this a try.

Tony.

ps. If you are anywhere near to me, I would be happy to help.

I will give the file a go. The threads on the shaft are perfect.

Unfortunately I might be a bit far for you to help. Belfast in Northern Ireland lol

Thanks for the help 🙂

I don't have any spares sorry. I'm just about to put my driveshafts back after my first full rear-end rebuild. One came out easy. The other needed a 10 ton press. So I may have a similar issue in reverse. I might get one of these tools if required.

That looks like a handy kit to have.

I will try filing the splines and if that doesn't work I may grab one of those kits to see if that helps.

Thanks

Chris

For avoidance of doubt you’re not filing the splines. You’re just cleaning out any glue in the grooves

After a weeks holiday in the Highlands (unfortunately without the Z), I picked up one of the driveshaft puller tools, cleaned the splines with a small file and she is all back together at long last 😁😁

Thanks for the help everyone

So the tool worked well to pull the driveshaft in? I have one on the way. One of my driveshafts went in by hand. The other, no doubt the one that needed the heavy press to dismantle didn't. And there is no glue in the splines.

It worked perfectly.

It worth noting that I broke the part that threads onto the driveshaft during the process. It was my fault though rather than the tool itself. I hadn't threaded it the full way onto the driveshaft without realising. But it got the job done and I wouldn't hesitate buying another
