Rear Caliper MOT Fail

Took the zed for an MOT expecting it to breeze through but it didn't, the rear nearside caliper isn't working very well and needs replacing . The nearside headlamp aim isn't quite right either but that's most likely the bulb isn't sitting quite right.

They have also quoted £260 for the replacement caliper which is astronomical. He suggested I bought the parts myself and get them to fit like they did with my discs, pads and suspension. Any recommendations on replacement calipers and suppliers? And is it worthwhile to replace both if they're doing a fluid change anyway. I'll get them to fit braided brake hoses aswell whilst they're there as I forgot before.

RealOEM is giving me the part number 34211164397 for the left/nearside caliper and 34211164398 for the righ/offside.

This one seems to be the cheapest left caliper I've found, what's the brand like?

Its probably the piston sticking, you could get a service kit for half the price of a caliper

Real OEM also shows a repair kit for the caliper, I would go down that route. Part number 34211158883,
ring Sopers and ask for a price.

Before you buy repair kits make sure your garage will fit them. Many will not due to risk of seal leaks. There are not that many "fitters", "Technicians", call them what you will, who have the knowledge and experience to rebuild callipers any more. Most only want to bolt new pieces on.

Good point Tony, I would do it myself but I know not everyone would try it.

FYI, The rear calipers on the Z3 are the same across the full range excluding the ///M.

I have had sticky callipers before and found as long as they wern't leaking the best fix was new discs and pads.
The act of moving the piston in and out a few times, setting it further back with thicker pads and bleeding new fluid through it meant it it ended up working normally.

Yep much cheaper option just done the rears on my M very easy got and the kits come with all the lubes and seal paste

I would and definitely get new pistons as well, if they are sticking then the piston is probably corroded. Its an easy job too, my kit from here came with an idiot sheet on "how too". if you need it

just did this on my wife's 120i and its so easy, brand new part turns up in the post, no faffing doing rebuilds and the caliper is mega shiny.

Ahh I didn't realise the other caliper link further up didn't include everything. I just want to give the garage the replacement parts and for them to fit them for me.

Well I've ordered those Pagid refurbished calipers to replace both rears and a full set of braided brake hoses. I did have to replace one of the front calipers when the discs and pads were changed, a part of me thinks I should just replace the other aswell.

3 calipers and goodridge brake hose kit all ordered. Just need to buy 5L of the best recommended brake fluid and I should be good. Been quoted a couple of hours labour for the work.

yeah 2 hours sounds about right if they are changing the lines.

5ltr is way over the top mate. 2 at the most. Brake fluid doesn't store well once opened so only get as much as you need. New callipers hold very little fluid because they come with piston pushed right back.
