Rear bearing puller advice

Wife’s MOT due next month and both rear brake dust shields are rotten where the brake shoe retaining pins sit, last year I improvised with stainless Allen bolts which the tester said weren’t a problem although I would like to replace at some point.
I believe the rear hubs will have to come off, can some one advise which cheapish bearing puller kit to purchase as I’ll only be using it the once ( hopefully) , thanks Peter.

Hi Peter, replacing the rear dust shields is quite a task as you are probably best to do the rear wheel bearings whilst you are at it as the rear hubs rarely come out leaving the bearings in tact. @Lee used to offer a replacement service but not sure if he still does this. The rear of the Z3 is based on the E30 so search for pullers for this platform. HTH.

Thanks Brian wasn’t very clear in the original post, have done a little YouTube research so understand the bearing will need doing just didn’t want to buy a set of the cup type bearing pullers that were the wrong size or if there is a better way.
Have read loads of the Zshed posts and in awe of the work these guys do, would take me weeks to refresh the whole rear end ( which it could do with) ,but being the wife’s daily driver I,m under pressure to get each job finished the same day.

My advice would be don’t do this job just for the sake of the handbrake shoe retaining pins. Very common issue and lots of Z3s driving round with bolt arrangements to repair.

If you think your bearings are gone that’s different. The big issue is getting the driveshafts out if they’ve never been removed before. The bearings are easy with a cheap multi cup set.

Thanks chaps I actually thought my stainless Allen bolts worked better than the original pins so good to hear there’s other Z’s running around like this.
Wheel bearings seem fine ,the main mot work are the rusty rear brake lines so will concentrate on those for now,had a little experience replacing them on my lads Z4 as one of his let go last year!

It wasn't one of the fronts inside the wing liner by any chance?

If @t-tony says it’s okay then it’s definitely okay. He’s an experienced man and former MOT tester so worry no more. He’s where I learnt the fix from :)

Was the rear near side brake that decided it had had enough about 30 miles from my sons place. We replaced all the hard rear lines and put stainless flexi’s all round.
Is it me or do BMW’s seem to have poor quality hard lines? Been looking for a pre 2005 X5 to take the dogs out ,I realise they are now 16+ years old but the MOT history makes interesting reading…….

You don't need to remove the hubs to change the backplates.

You can cut the backplates and make small connector strips to hold them together.

I did this because I tried to press a bearing out with a 15-ton press and it wasn't having any of it...

Where I used to work we did this, with customer consent. Tack welded together after fitting.

Quick update,decided to leave the backplates this year as the rear bearings are fine and the Allen bolts and nyloc nuts are still doing a job!
Stainless line kits arrived and some new hard line, do you guys have a favoured place to cut and join in the new hard lines for the rear callipers without the need to remove everything?
