rattling sound in low rpm range

I can hear a rattling sound coming from the back left side of the car when I'm accelerating, it's most obvious in the low rpm range in first or second gear. It also started out rather faint but now its really loud and obvious.

After failing to find the cause of the sound myself, I took it to my mechanic who said its most likely coming from the exhaust, like a loose baffle inside the exhaust. He said they would have to replace the entire exhaust system to fix the problem.

I would like to try to avoid that as that sounds very expensive, he said I could get an exact estimate when I pick up my car, but I'm sure it won't be cheap.

Has anyone had a similar problem recently? Any ideas on what I can do other than replace the entire exhaust system?

Thanks for the help,
-Steffen

What a nice mechanic. If it is definitely in the backbox then any reputable exhaust shop will make and fit a stainless steel backbox in it's place for less than £200. Google longlife exhausts.
