Hi all have a 1998 2.8 (Non-TU).

Ive noticed recently, that when i start the engine there is a weird bubbling/rattling noise coming from the engine. This is regardless if the engine is cold or hot. It sounds like water/air bubbling from somewhere. Any ideas what it could be? I thought it might have been air trapped in the cooling system but Id assume that would only kick in when the engine is hot? Plus, ive opened the bleed screw and only fluid comes out.

Also, not sure if its related, when I turn the engine off, about 5 seconds later there is a small wooosh should.

Thanks for any help!

Hi Bubbling/Rattling thats two very different sounds, can you decide either way or be more specific? Also is just on start up or does it persist? Also do you have the anti smog pump fitted? (front left side of the engine bay, black and round thing

Sounds like air trapped in the heater matrix, the system will move it on start up but when stood the sit will percolate back to the highest point in the system. I would try bleeding the system with the front of the car raised up with heater on HOT.

I was wondering if it was the emissions pump? Mine used to make some really strange noises for a few mins on start up

Mine did too but it ran continuous for about 30 seconds.

I am sure the air pump thing can be deleted? I am sure I removed it on my first 2.8 but I might be wrong

Yes Tony, it can be and really there is no good reason to keep it on a car here in the UK. I ditched mine because the bearings in the motor were shot and it howled it's nuts off till the relay switched it off.

Yes mate, you can unplug the wiring to the motor and tape it back and remove the small vacuum pipe from the unit fixed to the head and plug it with something (I pushed a ball bearing into mine). Then take the unit off the head (I have a few blanking plates left) and cover the port on the head. The main pump is fastened down with 2 13mm nuts.

Cheers folks for the replies. It's not that loud. I thought I might have been perhaps the viscous fan rattling. It's a rattle bubble noise. It's hard to explain. Its like on an old carb engine when you would get a slight stutter in the engine, except constant, but it doesn't stutter. I tried taking a video but it wouldn't pick it up. It happens when the engine is on. Hot or cold 5 minutes or an hour. It's there.
