With the top up there is a rattle at the rear right, but when the top is down all is quiet whatever the road surface. I jacked up the car and checked around the rear wheel but nothing lose. Could it be the RH soft top mechanism and where to access it? Any ideas please.

It may be the upper suspension mount these are prone to rattling as they fail. The hood down may just drown it out with wind noise an easy job and not and expensive one 
As per last post, same noise and when I had the top mounts renewed it went so can only assume it was that.
If you jack the car under the chassis so that the weight is hanging on the suspension, take a longish bar under the tyre and lift up while watching the top shock absorber mounting. You may see some movement there to confirm what's been said.

Had a similar problem on my Coupe, a rattle from the rear when negotiating cracks/bumps in road surfaces. After getting some bushes replaced plus the rear top mounts, the silence was deafening!!!
