I'll soon have my zed back on the road again and one of the things that enjoy is driving with some decent tunes on. However, the standard system is hopeless, tinny, thin and really quite disappointing. My car is not standard, and neither is the head unit so I'm not fussed about replacing everything. What I don't want to do is cut up the trim etc so would like to replace what's there with better units.

One issue is the lack of bass, so a sub would seem like a good idea. However, I use the centre compartment for storage when we take the car on holiday or go on road trips.

Does anyone have an experience with the slim under seat active subs?

Also, what are the best replacement speakers to get and is it worth getting a separate amp, or will a new head unit be sufficient to power them?

I have a blaupunkt one behind my seat and its great. Gives out plenty of bass especially for the size of the unit. You will need to locate it behind the seat though or somewhere else as there is no room to get it underneath the seat itself. As I don't need my seat all the way back I have it behind mine but if you need it back most of the way then stick one in behind the passenger seat.

I have a kenwood head unit and have changed all the speakers with vibe units. The front ones are 5 inch components with tweeters on the dash and the rear are 4 inch but they require some modification to the trim.

I am very happy with the sound set-up and there is plenty of bass with the slim sub and still sounds great and loud enough even with the roof down.

See my journal for more info.

It's a really nasty aftermarket one! It was in the car when I got it. Ideally I'll go for a DAB with a decent power output.

It's best to build your system around a good quality head unit. I know a few on here have gone with Alpine, and it's what I want to change my Sony unit with. The Sony gives great sound through the Harmon Kardon speakers in mine, but the front panel is just too disco for my liking!
