Radio reception

My radio reception is poor when going along, but when parked up with engine off it is fine.
Has anyone had this same problem and if so how did you rectify it ?

No, its just sort of a bit hissy unclear when engine is going

From a quick google it says its likely to be the ariel causing it....Poor reception

If the noise is present on only radio reception it says try a noise surpresser on the ariel lead if its all sources it may be an earthing issue. Poor earth or again using the ariel as an earth.
If all sources you can put a cd on and remove the ariel from the rear and see if it clears up again indicating the ariel.

Do you have anything plugged in your cig lighter, I bought a usb charger and when its plugged in I get the same issue.

That's weird about cigar lighter. As many of you know my car suffered from an horrendous battery drain nobody could find the drain until @smiffy came to the rescue and sourced it down to fuse 9. Which supply's CD exchange which I don't have. Amp which I don't have and radio memory obviously I do need.
So we removed fuse 9 and routed the radio memory wire to the cigar lighter for a live source.
And since no radio reception at all just crackles hisses if you turn volume up you can vaguely hear the station .it worked before this alterations checked back of radio aerial plugged in wires on antenna in boot.
At a total loss as CD works perfectly does anyone think it could cigar memory source ?

I had bad reception on my 1.9 took the aerial out and stripped it down by removing the top, it unscrews. There is a very thin wire inside that feeds to the centre of the mast when that is screwed onto the unit, mine was falling apart, I managed to solder a replacement in using some thin insulated cable to make the connection. Result was restored reception. I suspect that the original wire decayed over time and from dampness getting in there. when taking the unit out inside the boot, there is a live feed to it and easy to short it out on the metalwork.

Gents, Thanks for your replies I will try and answer all in this post.
The radio is normal and good when engine is off but as you pull away it goes down hill and reception is poor, this is all stations.
I have got a new grommet for the aerial coming from Sopers so when I fit that I presume that the aerial has to be removed in which case I will check all connections and inside the aerial. Must admit I have not tried a CD but think that it will be ok but I will see what happens. Sometime I have a sat nav in the cig lighter but not always.
Tracey thanks for you reply which is interesting, I also have a large drain 15MA but have still got to run checks to see which circuit, another job.
Now that I have sold my 1964 TR4 I should get a bit more time to fiddle with the Zed but family down for a few days so will not get a chance until in the week when I will post up my findings, but a lot going on at this time of year.

Sounds like the aerial or the amp which I think is in the base of the aerial. Check that it has power connected.

You can get the grommet on quite easily using washing up liquid as a lube, no need to remove the aerial.

Yes pull the side carpet back to reveal the aerial base might be a little tighter to work on if you have a power hood with its pump mounted next to the aerial.
