Bassets Honda in Swansea have a Honda branded type 096 battery for £56.99. A type 096 is the correct battery for a 2.2 and may well be the correct part for a 2.0/2.8/3.0/M - you will need to check that yourself. It will of course also do a job in a 1.9 where the battery type may more normally be a smaller type 075.

Now the fact it has Honda on it should be good enough. But Honda use Varta batteries. One of the best batteries around. And they don't just use any Varta battery but from cross checking details in the listing, the battery capacity of 77aH (and an equally beefy 780 CCA) turns out to be a top of the range Silver Dynamic battery that normally retails for £125+ from local discount factors (though it can be had for around £90 on ebay).

Btw thats my local (Swindon) battery store and they are very good and very competitive on price and this battery is £123.99 there.

The Honda battery comes with a 3 year warranty against 5 years from Varta though.

And if you need further convincing of provenance, Varta batteries are made on the same production line as Bosch. This is the same battery as a Bosch S5. And this is a Dec 2017 article, not 10 years old such that the manufacturing facility may have changed.

I've ordered 2 for collection to save the £10 postage each. But even with the £10 postage they are a bargain :)

I've done my research carefully but please be certain to satisfy yourself before buying ;)

I had this wonderful little battery condition tester from Father Christmas and it works brilliantly to give you a health check on a battery.

http://www.newcastlediagnostics.co.uk/5104380927803392/foxwell-bt100-battery-analyzer-tester

Of 5 batteries I had 2 were well past it, 1 was okay-ish and only 2 proved to be healthly.

Having done a lot of reading up on batteries I can see now why you really shouldn't leave a battery connected for more than a week (maybe 2) without using the car or giving it a trickle charge.

The OEM battery is quite a modest capacity - 70ah and 570 CCA. This one is 77ah and 770CCA.

Although I’m not suggesting the BMW battery is anything other than man enough for the job.

Also in my world of telecoms cost accountancy, if I can pay £57 and for a better unit, rather than £75, I usually say thank you very much ;) 24% saving :)

Belated thanks for the tip Rob - I bought one of these and its now charged ready to go. My Bosch S4 is knackered I think after only 18 months. Its supposed to have a 2 yr guarantee in this country so I'll take it back to GSF and see what they say. Interestingly, when I bought the S4, they listed a 60AH (054?) for my car but now the recommendation is for the 096 which is obvoiusly a higher rated battery.

I had a 2 year guarantee Exide battery go just inside 2 years a couple of weeks back. What they told me suggests you might as well have a 200 year guarantee as it will not help you.

They were adamant if it's faulty manufacturing it manifests itself in the first 3 months of use. And 99% of failures outside of that time span are down to user abuse, ie letting a battery drain. In our case we let it drain once, though probably let it sit there for a few weeks. Apparently it was this that knackered it. I know batteries don't like that sort of thing but it didn't just reduce the output. It absolutely crippled it.

You should have stood your ground a 2 year warranty is just that. We always honour battery warranties at work.

I suppose ultimately chaps, it would be down to the wording of the warranty. Unfortunately, I could find nothing at all about the Bosch warranty, other than ' 2 year'. (Although it's 4 years for an S4 elsewhere).

Part of the trouble was I bought the battery online and surprise, surprise the seller has gone AWOL. So I took it in to the local Exide dealer in Swindon (The Battery Shop), they are good guys and I guess I needed them to volunteer to help out rather than demand it as I certainly would have done if they were the original seller.
