The E85 has a curved front bumper, I've noticed there is a nice fitted number plate holder which allows you to clip a plate in.

The E89 is also curved and doesn't seem to have that option, number plates either screwed or taped on directly.

My existing front number plate had the backing material start to debond, black mould to start to form. It did go through MOT but thought it best not to risk an advisory next year.

Bought new plates, found a number plate holder on Amazon. Screw the back plate on the bumper, clip the new plate in to the holder, swing the holder down and engage the bottom clips.

Except it doesn't really work - the bottom clips pop out because of the curvature of the bumper.

Put a grubber screw in the bottom middle to make sure I don't loose the plate. The two sides still pop out, so another grub screw on each side to hold it down.

But looking at the back of the holder on the sides, it's an awfully thin piece of plastic that seems to be holding it on and it looks stressed. First Yorkshire winter I suspect thats going to go brittle and separate.

What I really need is an E85 number plate holder for the curvature of the E89 bumper.

Anyone have a solution ?

You can warm the plates with a hot air gun Alex and bend them slightly and then fix to the bumper with gaffer tape t ill it cools. Should stay bent then.

Now why didn't I think of that. Probably because I don't have a heat gun, that's why - lol !

I think the plates bend fine, its the holder that's a bit stiff. And the type I've bought kindof needs to be flat, so it can swing down and clip in. If I heat that it won't swing down ? I think . . .

I looked at this one as I wanted to have something protecting the top of the plate to help stop the water getting in behind the reflective film again.

I may have to have a rethink. Worst comes to the worst, I either leave it as it is, or just screw/tape it like the old one.

I wonder if an E85 holder will fit the E89 curve ?

Had the same issue, I wanted plate holders I searched but couldn't find a curved one for the e89, don't think they exist.

@Nodzed

Thanks Niall. I've been thinking about it, I've got to do something, I don't like what I've got, so ordered this one.

Worst comes to the worst, I've wasted £17 and I have to go back to tape. I'll post a picture as to how I get on.

Thanks for your help on this, I appreciate it !

@Nodzed it looks like it should, its stamped Wurth and looks pukkah. Have to squeeze with your thumbs on each side of the bottom piece to unclip and then slide the plate up and in. But I need to check, I think you may only be able to slide in once as there looks like a danger some holding clips may break off. I need to fiddle . . .

Should have fitted Saturday but too hot (think I had a nap and a beer instead if I'm honest), and Sunday was Tony's run.

It looks the real deal, it did take longer to arrive, I'll add photos when I've done.

Thanks, any info following the fitting would be appreciated.

edit: I would heat the plate and put a bend in it so there's less pressure on the holder?

Okay, today was the day.

Verdict: this looks like the answer @Nodzed , fits easily, feels nice and solid.

Pre-pictures before fitting . . . (remove the bottom clip by squeezing with your thumbs simultaneously at each end and sliding down)

Fitted. Bonus: previous mounting holes still line up.

Only aside: the bottom clip on each side. I couldn't get the plate clipped in underneath the clip even on the bench. Looks like it might be for a thinner plate than this gel one. Otherwise its a clip to hold the plate to stop it sliding side to side. Not wanting to force it that's my theory anyway !

But with the bottom clip back in place it all feels really solid.

Thanks Niall, this one looks like the answer . . .
