Did they diagnose "slack chain" due to noise at the front of the engine ? If so it could more likely to be a noisy vanos, which is quite a common thing on 2.8 zeds which are now all around 20 years old.
The main timing chain tensioner is self tensioning and does not require attention unless you dismantle it for some reason or other, such as if you have to take the cylinder head off.
You don't need to touch the main timing chain to work on the vanos, but you will expose it so that you can do a thorough examination.
Is your car single vanos or dual vanos? The single vanos engines are fitted to prefacelift zeds but the dual vanos engines have been fitted to cross over cars, ie late refacelift / early facelift, and all facelift zeds. I've never seen a facelift zed with a single vanos 2.8 engine.
A vanos refurb is an easy job for a competent mechanic / DIYer.
