Having problem removing the key from the ignition. Have to jiggle the gear stick (automatic) and go through a squence of trying different gear settings before it all "aligns" to release the keys. Need help urgently. Appears might be the ignition switch.

Not sure on auto Z3 but on my Merc it must be in Park for the key to come out.

Someone with more knowledge then me will be along soon.

Ahhh.... sorry MisterP007... that's not a 007 response That's sort of a given that has to be in park! I have a Z4, but yes ALL automatics need to be in park for the key to be removed. This is a fault and appears to be the ignition switch. But thanks for the response. Appreciate

I had the same problem with a Mercedes 190e and yes, I had to have a new new ignition lock cylinder installed with new keys supplied.

Yes this seems to be the case from what I'm gathering... although it appears only requires the ignition switch. Checked on Youtube and not a major job to switch out... (excuse pun).

if you can wait for them to order it yes but I did not have the time for that so had one installed that the garrage had on stock.

Well turns out it's a coin problem. I'd removed my ash tray, and in error dropped my change into which then slipped down to my gear box. I'm hoping it's going to fall through and not get caught there.

I was going to say exactly that, always the first thing to check with an auto.
Doesn't actually go into the gearbox, the selector on an auto is either rotary, some sort of rail system, or a mixture. Not familiar with the Z one. Coins or detritus in there causes chaos. Either the key doesn't come out, or, it won't turn over in P, but will in N.
Other cause is a previous owner who SLAMS it into P continually. Some cars have a microswitch, Slamming it can bend the plate or crack the switch.
