Here is an interesting one ( for me anyway). I have a 2000 2.2. Picked her up for a bargain as the body had been keyed. Beyond that she had only 50k on the clock, a great spec, very good history and was immaculate. After looking at options to respray I happened upon an identical blue 1.9, 6 months newer ( X reg rather than W in the UK). More mileage, tired interior and no MOT, but decent enough body. I bought her and am now swapping over the bonnet, boot, drivers door and rear wing. I'll then sell on the 1.9.

However, I noticed that the underneath of the panels on the 2.2 is black, whereas the 1.9 is blue ( a flat shade of the main body colour). Anyone know why this would be did BMW change the primer process at some point?

I think there’s varied views on the black matt. I associate it with individual builds. But I know some understand it to be later builds. I have a June 02 car but is black anyway so cant tell the difference.

My 'last off line' 2002 1.9 is satin matt black in these areas. Not an 'Individual' but a Sport.
Both my 2.2 and the 3.0 are 2002 cars, both sports but the 2.2 is an individual and they're both satin black...
