Power steering reservoir gasket

I am stumped.

I need the power steering reservoir gasket so I ordered it as pictured being part number 16306004001. When I got the part it is an O ring and not a gasket! If you google the part it comes up as a O ring but the O ring will not fit in anywhere! Am I doing something wrong?

BMW insist this is the correct part but the picture clearly shows a flat gasket. I even asked them to inquire from the mechanics about this, same answer....:banghead:

So, at the moment I have just used plumbers thread tape which is working fine but I want to do it properly. What part do all of you guys use?

Just had a look on mine, it is hard to tell but I am fairly certain it is an o ring that is is place. The part number I see for the item is 32 41 1 128 333, on the picture in realoem etc. is does show a flat gasket. when checking the part number in the usage tab it shows the o ring is used throughout the full range of Zeds 1.9 to 3.2 inclusive.

Any pics of your reservoir lid?
 
@Brian H I will get a picture tomorrow as it is night time here. It seems to be stock standard. I cannot see where the O ring can sit on the lid. The ring just fits over the thread on the lid and there doesn't seem to be a place where the ring can sit into. The lid cannot be screwed down if the ring is placed on the lid. I expected the gasket to fit over the thread and sit comfortably on TOP of the flat surface where the lid and reservoir meet as per the OEM diagram. Please note I may have given the incorrect part number above as I cannot quite remember but the ....333 seems familiar.
 
I just checked mine and it has an O-ring.

The O-ring stretches over the threaded part of the screw-in cap and sits right at the bottom of the threads, against the flat surface of the cap.

So when you screw it on to the resevoir, the 0-ring does not contact until the cap is almost completely screwed down. As in the last turn of the cap.
 
Solved. The O ring was so old it was bevelled and hardened to the point where it was indistinguishable from the lid. I took it out to the light of the sun and noticed a very small gap which i prised open with jewelers screwdriver. Victory. Replaced with the new o ring and all is well.
