Looks great!! Ever wondered about polishing the lip on styling 42? Chrome on lighter colors looks astonishing, really nice car -congratulations
Yes the alloy wheel man said they will do a different tone of paint on the lip so you can see they are spilt rims won't go go as far as chrome on them need to be able to easily reverse things should I wish to go back to original.

Ah I see. Now that I do like a lot, going to email that pic to him to see how much extra.
Hope he's quicker at doing the work than getting the bolts.

They look as awkward to clean as my 78's. Looking great now - at least that one is;)

It is a bare aluminium. It is polished. There is no coat covering. You need to take care of it or it will be damaged. Repolish with hand/machine once in a month. Not so bad. This is the only way for a good refections beside real chrome.

It's interesting as I'm looking at finishes for the lips on my Beyerns.
They are polished and the coated from what I can tell. Stones chip the surface which then results in the lacquer lifting and strange patterns appearing like in your before shots (especially at the rear where there is plenty of dish to collect the stones).

With a polished surface any superficial chips and scratches can be dealt with easily. I guess you can also control the amount of shine you want by how much you polish, I personally and tired of the full mirror look of mine now after 4 years and would prefer to try a less shiny look but still be more 'polished' looking than the spokes.

Question is how much polishing are we looking at every month? What sort or machine do you use?

This is what they were like new, not so shiny now...

Getting back to the OP I would definitely go for polished/shinier lip, will set if the grey body work and other bits really well and look very OEM as there are old and new BMW wheels with polished lips. I don't think anyone would question it were standard or not just that it looks better than new..!

Personally, I would use a mushroom or taper buff on the whole wheel with different buffing compounds for each. So two would be best, use a brown for the centres and l iOS and finish the lip with red. Put a coating of wax on and should be just wash and wear for two or three months. A reversible drill works best and saves the body, arms and hands. Aluminium polishes nicely but exposed to the atmosphere oxidizes quickly if not protected. That's why so many rims are chromed or powder coated. I prefer doing stainless personally and spend hours at the buffing machine getting just the finest finish possible. HTH JIM

You right there lex boy hence it goes to the hand car wash but I try and go really early and know the chaps well and tip well so they clean all the spokes!

Sorry not selling those wheels! I have a set of 17inch 78's too which are lovely but need spacers.
However I love the look and uniqueness of these Multis, just makes the car for me so they stay!

Hi, and yes it would but is very time consuming. It would come in handy in very tight areas where the buff don't fit. I customize shapes for different areas by trimming for each job. If you just use a dremel on AL keep your speed very low as it will burn pretty quick, that's where a variable drill comes in handy. I use a buffer machine onto which I can use 10" wheels of various thicknesses with attachments for different buff shapes. This only works if the wheel has no tire though, on the car the drills come out. HTH JIM

Just to clarify regarding chroming and it's removal. Any chrome shop can quite easily remove the chroming using a reversal process which will leave your wheel unharmed. If you google or YouTube the process used for chroming you can get a clear understanding of the process. I have a product which apply said conductive surface to non conductive a which allows the chroming of plastics exactly as it is done in a majority of vehicles today. JIM

Just had an email from Alloy wheel man bolts are in. As for the shine on the rims extra £120 didn't think it would cost any more, however he said he needs to look at the wheels again for suitability. Call them tomorrow and see when they can do it.
