Well here goes with another progress thread.

The story of bringing Peanut all the way back from Scotland to Swindon is here.

https://zroadster.org/threads/easter-road-trip-to-pick-up-a-z3.22481/

Why Peanut? We always call the cars after the 3 letters in their registrations and this one is PNJ which left slim pickings. We came up with Peanut Butter Jelly (a delicacy in the US apparently). So it's Peanut for short :)

Picking up from the initial work we did when we landed Peanut (in the road trip thread) we started checking her over to have a go at firing her up.

The seller had already made me aware of a split in the MAF hose.

By the time it was off it proved to be quite a big one!

With a split that bad it made me suspicious of other rubber in the engine bay. So the lower hose, the throttle intake, was also taken off and found to be deteriorated. On the 'thumb' that goes to the idle valve.

As was the flexible section of the vacuum hose which (if I remember correctly) goes off to the fuel filter. This hose is nearly always deteriorated on every car I've seen so it's worth checking yours.

The 2 air intake hoses are unique to the 3.0 so my spares off the 2.2s were no good.

I ordered a genuine BMW lower hose as it was £13 and the same price as a copy part. The upper hose is £25 from BMW. Now this may sound tight but I have so much money to spend on this car that I went for a copy part here (well researched) for £13. I couldn't see any second-hand parts and even if there were people tend to charge similar money as new ones. If the copy part doesn't fit properly or just looks c*ap then it will be lesson learned.

The smaller vacuum hose line BMW sell by the metre and I still have some left after using on 2 other cars. You only need a few inches before it goes into hard plastic.

Good start

As always with these cars, take 1 piece off and notice another piece that needs sorting lol

I did a pretty rubbish job of taking photos and documenting the work via this thread.

The work we did in the end was:
  • All new cunifer brake lines
  • New flex brake hoses
  • Refurbished calipers (& carriers)
  • New brake linings all round
  • New rear drop links
  • Fuel tank drained after standing for 4 years with previous owner. New fuel filter
  • New Monroe shocks all round. Pleasant surprise to find almost new BMW correct Sport springs all round
  • Brand new horns. Not BMW - expensive and proprietary connector. We made up factory looking reversible adapter leads to generic Flaam (OEM) horns
  • New bonnet release mechanism
  • New wiper blades
  • De-rust inner sills/adjacent floor pan. Treat and repaint
  • Replaced ABS lateral acceleration sensor
  • Boot carpets deep cleaned
  • Illuminated gear knob replaced
  • Replaced bonnet side grill BMW badges
  • Re-panelled from a lovely donor car that is now a Ferrari (or thinks it is)
Peanut passed the MOT on Monday!

Here he is sat with my 3GT. A nice contrast in black and white :)

The story of the bodywork is that it was bought as an unfinished project. It was pulled back from the bodyshop with the paint applied but not polished. It was poorly applied with moisture (not rust) blisters appearing and bad lacquer runs. Also the silver fleck was swapped for red fleck. And the black base didn't look like true Sapphire Black which is very dark and solid.

So we replaced all the panels. With the exception of the doors, mirror covers and nearside sill cover which weren't available. The panels are lovely - the donor car must have been recently resprayed and to a very high standard.

So we have a Titan Silver nearside sill cover and Boston Green mirror covers currently. Along with the red fleck doors and screen surrounds.

So a bit of paint required to make perfect. Would love to pop it up to @Sean d but too far. So I'll have to leave it in the hands of local guys. Getting some quotes very soon.

It still looks nice as is but getting the paint sorted is the priority. Along with some replacement wheels. Preferably the original BBS RS765 split rims (aka Type 42 split rims). It still had it's factory rims on purchase but they were too gone for me and went to some bloke who made them look new and now adorn his Austin Yellow 2.8. These are the rims I need to find.

Plenty of snagging/finishing jobs to do. Not least re-colour of the interior. I find Dream Red a bit dull so we will jazz it up with a shade of red a little brighter. I prefer to keep everything factory normally but the desire to do that shade change is too strong.

Yes, the self-professed purveyor of how it left the factory has gone slightly off-piste.

Here's the offending horn assembly. Not bad for less than £30 all-in - new horns and cables/connectors. And that's both sides. Fiaam were one of 2 OEM suppliers around 2000 anyway :) BMW horns are £80 pr and it will be the same horn but with the original connector. Secondhand ones - nearly always nasty.

And I mean, if you're gonna have a red interior it's got to be more lively than this hasn't it?

It will be more like this red when done but keeping the 2 tone with black.

Looking great it’s going to be cracker when finished.
We did our usual and worked every spare minute over 3 months at the exclusion of everything else in life. Although we stopped in the middle for James' GCSEs/revision.

So we are on a Z3 break until September now. The interior will have to wait. But if I can put the money together we'll certainly get the paintwork sorted before then.

In the meantime I have to say it's a lovely car to drive. 105k miles but drives as sweetly as my 63k 2.2. The 3.0 purrs along in a much more effortlessly way than the 2.2.

So we will just be enjoying for now and hope no one spots the odd colour parts :)
