I Know what you mean, if you could that would be great, thanks already for your help, I usually figure out the problem in the end but this one is frustrating !

hoses going hard can be a sign of head gasket failure. Compression from the cylinders getting into the cooling system.

This happens quickly though, and will also do it from cold very quickly.

My money would still be on an airlock, assuming all the work done is sound.

I guess the question is whether the cooling problem you have now was the original cause of the head gasket failure. What was the condition of the coolant when you drained it to lift the head? As several members have said, the symptoms point a blockage somewhere. Does it boil if you run it with the header tank cap removed? Could one of the hoses have disintegrated internally and be restricting the flow of coolant?

I've had a good long think, and I still reckon there's a blockage somewhere. Long-distance diagnosing is a tricky thing. As said above, hoses can collapse internally, won't show from outside. And, again, the coolant system needs a bit of a restriction to help it exchange heat through the radiator, having the coolant pump round really quickly can mess it about, and if the thermostat ain't there that may be enough to make it overheat. Wish I could help more, but too far away.

if it was me i would drain all the coolant and catch as much as possible.

Pull the radiator out sounds hard but actually is really easy.. then give the radiator a good flush through with a hose in both directions, then flush all the associated hoses you can get to in the engine bay with a hose and reverse flushing everything until you can confirm all hoses and water paths are free and running.. then put in a new thermostat, fill with just plain water run the car and make sure theres no leaks. drain and refill to the correct level with 50 / 50 coolant distilled water, and with heater switched on to max and bleed and see where you are from there..

once all the water has dried up then underbonnet you can see then if theres any additional leaks...

top up and monitor coolant level, dashboard temp guage should get to hot ( middle~) within about 2 miles and stay there..

My torque app notifies me verbally that engine temparature has been reached, this alert happens at 72 degrees,the temperature guage then stays at middle on dashboard... radiator fan should come on occasionally not sure at what temperature the rad fan comes on and off at....

hope this helps its what i did with my 1.9 when i replace the thermostat..

Hi , having a problem with overheating on my z3, its had a new headgasket , head was pressure tested and skimmed,new waterpump and rad.
The car will overheat if the heater isnt on, ive checked the water temp in the rad and the engine outlet , it doesnt seem to get very hot around the 90degrees , any ideas? thanks

how are you determerning the water temperature is 90 degrees..?

I use the torque app and my water temperature on the torque android app goes to around 90- 92 degrees depending on if i run the cabin heater.. normally with the cabin heater on it will take away about 3 degrees of temperature from the torque apps temperature reading.... i use this app along with dashboard temperature guage to confirm true temperature reading... as the dashboard temperature gauge will read middle at as low as 70 degrees...

My Torque app tells me that my coolant is always around 96 degrees. It gous down to 82 if I climbing a hill or so. Is you problems solved btw?
