Overheating issues

Hi folks. My 1998 Z3 2.8 began overheating recently. I shut the car down immediately, waited three hours for it to cool, then drove the .5 mile home. Since then I've gone for a short drive in which it began overheating again. That time I shut the car down for no more than a couple of minutes and turned the key on to check the temp gauge, which had dropped to a nearly-normal range. I drove a couple of miles home with the heater turned on full blast and noticed that no heat was blowing through the vents.

The car has sat since then and I am now getting ready to do some work on it. I am guessing the water pump has failed, but would appreciate feedback about possible explanations for this overheating and parts sources.

Additional info: I've owned the car for the past two years and do not know what has been done to the cooling system previously. It has nearly 250,000 miles on it, so there's obviously been updates/maintenance at some point.

Did you check the coolant level before going out on that second run?

The Z3 engines are made of aluminium and don't like being over heated or run with no coolant.

Check coolant level. If it low/non existent then look for the leak.
- Expansion tank
- Radiator hoses
- Hole in Radiator
- Heater hoses/pipes

If the coolant level is good, then thermostat and water pump

Hope its something simple and the engine is all good.

No hot air blowing through the vents would suggest low coolant level, with hindsight you should have checked and topped up the coolant level before driving to 2 miles home (if you did then ignore this comment). You may well be lucky and have dodged a bullet but only time will tell. As Murray said Thermostat and water pump would be your starting point if you can't see where any coolant escaped.
Going on the mileage I'm guessing you are located in the USA?

Tony.

Coolant level was fine, sorry for not adding that to the initial post.

I am indeed in the US.

Thank for confirming that I should start with the pump and thermostat.
