I'll confess to being a merc man at heart. Had more mercs than beemers. I do love a nice merc. My dream car would be a 50/60's SL Roadster.

But between the two cars in the above pictures - I'd take the zed.

The R129s are getting very sought after and their prices rocketed for a while but seem to have tailed off. I must admit to having a soft spot for the previous generation R107s (which seemed to have dropped in value recently).
I think it would have to be an SL500 as a minimum. SL600 or the ultra rare SL55 AMG would be preferable.

Anything after 2001 are a POS, apparently.

2001. I'd say a few years earlier. The saying "built like a brick sh*thouse" only really applied up to mid 80's. Think 123 series and 107's.

When the 124 series E class came out you could feel it was made cheaper. I did have a 124 300TE and it was a nice car but after that they've been rust boxes.

Only car I regret selling was my 107 380 SLC.

Don’t some of them have wiring looms that all need replacing after a certain age? Personally, I like the look of them, but it doesn’t really suit the driving experience I’m after…at the moment.

No idea. These cars are getting to the age now where they are more a 'sunny Sunday only' classic than a means of transport IMO. I would only look at a car like these to be a 'garage queen' so the driving experience wouldn't be important to me.
Nostalgia too, for me. I am a child of the 70s and 80s, so that era of cars is dear to my heart. They were mostly crap but that's just the way it was! ;)
